Sinn Féin Republican Youth Attend Scontri Internaziunali

This year Ógra Shinn Féin activists Mark Moloney and Cllr PádraigQuinn represented Sinn Féin Óige Phoblachtach at the 8th annual ScontriInternaziunali.

The week long event organised by Cunsulta di a Ghjuventu Corsa, focuses on different aspects of small nations instruggle. This years topics discussed where; language and culture, politicalparticipation in universities and the importance of sport to small nations.

Speaking on his time there, Cllr Pádraig Quinn said:

"Sinn Féin Óige Phoblachtach was once again very happy toparticipate in Scontri Internaziunali. Corsicais a very beautiful place with a unique culture, language and people, who are muchdeserving of the independence they seek.

International delegations like this are vitally important asthey allow us to gain some much needed perspective on our struggle, learn fromothers who have faced similar situations and in turn show our solidarity andsupport. Sinn Féin Óige Phoblachtach will be hoping to continue thisstrong relationship between Corsican nationalists and Irish republicans formany years to come".

Preventing Suicide in the Community

28 people took part in a one day training programme on Saturday (14^th January) in Omagh Sinn Féin Office that empowered participants with the skills to tackle suicide in the community.

The course was provided by PIPS (Public Initiative for the Prevention of Suicide) and hosted by Ógra Shinn Féin.

Martin McColgan, Omagh Sinn Féin representative who completed the training on Saturday said,

“Suicide prevention is everyone’s business, we all need to be proactive in tackling this epidemic which is the biggest killer of our young people. The training programme equips people in the community with the confidence and the skills to effectively deal with someone who may be at risk of suicide.”

“It was an extremely beneficial course and to ensure that more people possess these life saving skills, Sinn Féin in conjunction with our youth wing are organising a number of other Suicide Prevention workshops in the Omagh area in the next few months.”

Help prevent suicide in the community

Ógra Shinn Féin is hosting a training programme 'Preventing Suicides in the Community.' It will take place in Omagh Sinn Féin Office from 10am - 4pm on Saturday 14th January and will be delivered by PIPS.

This is a one day training course and is aimed at ordinary members of the community. Participants will learn how to identify signs that someone is at risk and may be considering suicide, how to engage safely and effectively with someone who you believe may be at risk of suicide. It will enhance knowledge of the wide range of support that exists for people at risk of suicide, highlight the importance of supporting someone in making a link to a source of help and demonstrate the importance of maintaining their own positive mental health.

Many of us will be settling down to our Christmas dinner with our families later this month and for many of us December can prove to be the happiest month of the year. However, this month traditionally sees a rise in suicide rates here in Ireland, particularly among young men. Just last week a young man from my own town took his life, several more people did the same in West Belfast, so many others have taken that drastic step this year.

The statistics from the National Office of Suicide Prevention says that in 2010 there were 486 deaths by suicide, 386 of these people were men, a massive percentage being young men. Although this is down from the record high of 527 in 2009, the stats are there for all to see, we have a massive issue in this country and it needs addressed immediately on an All-Ireland basis.

We must all lobby our MPs, TDs, MLAs, councillors & everyone in a position to effect positive change to adopt this as one of their key policies. Sinn Féin & Ógra Shinn Féin have long advocated this, it is up to the other parties in the Dáil & in Stormont to start pushing for this now. However, we as activists can not wait for the Government to act, we can begin to affect our own positive change. Simple things like offering a kind word, not being afraid to stand out from the crowd and stick up for a victim of bullying, even a smile can brighten up someones day. All these things can have a positive effect on a person who may be feeling there is nothing left for them to live for, it might not cure depression, but it might keep them going long enough to realise there is a way forward.

I ask my friends and comrades to join with me in 2012 to reduce the rate of suicides in Ireland and beyond. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and for what its worth I am always available to speak to anyone who is feeling down and may want to have a chat. You could say that for someone who is contemplating suicide, life can only get better, so give life a chance.

Lets all work together to make suicide history.

Derry Ógra Shinn Féin hold 2nd annual Function and Presentation Night

Derry Ógra Shinn Féin will be hosting their annual function and presentation night in Seán Dolans GAC in Derry on Friday the 16th December.

The night will begin with support music provided by Ógra member Luke McLaughlin; this will be followed by a presentation made on behalf of Ógra Shinn Féin Doire.

The keynote address will be giving by Sinn Féin councillor and former Sinn Féin Youth member Elisha McCallion.

Sinn Féin Republican Youth support Maynooth Student's

Sinn Fein Republican Youth would like to voice it’s support for the actions of Maynooth Student’s Union and extend solidarity to the Union members who are currently peacefully occupying Fine Gael TD Anthony Lawlor’s office in Naas, County Kildare in protest of further education cuts likely to be announced in next week’s budget.

Ógra spokesperson and recent Maynooth graduate Cathal Óg Donnelly had this to say.
“It’s important to realise that many Student’s Unions shy away from even the idea of direct action of this nature, instead remaining silent on the bigger pictures prevalent in Irish society.

Maynooth students union have clearly showed leadership and courage on this issue. I hope that other Students Unions around the 26 counties follow suit and prove to the students they represent that they are fighting to save the grant and to prevent further education cuts rather than simply relying on lollypops to garner student votes in the future.

For too long the reputation of mainstream student politics has been trailed through the mud, now is the time for Irish students to play an active role in resisting the failed austerity measures of Labour and Fine Gael. While the USI seem intent on carrying out token, ineffectual actions even to the point of criticizing students attempts at direct action, it’s great to see an individual SU leading from the front on this issue. It’s about time a Student’s Union acted like a Student’s Union!”

As many of you are aware the month of December has always traditionally been Prisoners' month, and this December in the year 2011 is no different from the other years gone by. As many of you are probably aware, we still have one prisoner aligned to our movement on the E2 Landing in Portlaoise Gaol. Tom Hanlon from Cork is currently serving a three year and three month sentence for IRA membership on trumped up evidence and on the word of a detective chief superintendent.

Tom is a former Sinn Féin Councillor for Passage West in Cork and also stood in the 2002 General Election. He is the only POW aligned to us in Portlaoise Gaol, so it is upto us to support him on the outside.

Write a letter of support or send christmas cards to Tom and let him know he is not forgotten by ÓSF during the festive season! It only takes a few minutes to write a letter or card and it will be greatly appreciated and will boost morale for Tom knowing that you have taken the time to think about him.

An Cumann Cabhrach - The Republican Prisoner's dependants fund, will be holding a christmas fundraiser for Tom and his family on Saturday 17th of December in St.Vincent's GAA club in Cork city. Music will be provided on the night by Cork's No.1 Rebel band 'Clann Eireann' and the spectacular balladeer Roger Good. Tickets will cost 10 euro and are available from the Cork Sinn Féin Síopa, 136 Barrack St. Cork city. I would urge anyone who cannot attend the fundraiser to purchase a ticket regardless, or else make a donation to An Cumann Cabhrach if possible. It is all for a good cause.

'Government taking shirts off our backs!' Sinn Féin NUIG

On November 4th, Cumann D’Arcy/Mellows NUIG held a ‘Shirt off my back’ protest at Fine Gael’s Galway West constituency office to highlight the issues effecting students due to the austerity measures taken by the Fine Gael/Labour coalition, this included their refusal to reverse the hike in the registration fee and grant cuts in the last budget implemented by Fianna Fáil and the lack of opportunity for Ireland’s youth in which we face the prospect of the dole or emigration and little else.

In doing so, members of Ógra Shinn Féin went to the office in which we presented Brian Walsh TD’s parliamentary assistant with the shirt off our backs to signify what the current government is doing and what they will proceed to do in the upcoming budget. In doing so, we were handed with an article stating that Brian Walsh TD (FG) and Derek Nolan TD (Lab) are against the reintroduction of third level fees. When ÓSF members asked them about these statements both reiterated this, said they’d try to influence their respective parties to not bring in third level fees yet said they were lowly backbenchers, cannot influence much and will vote for the upcoming budget regardless of what it will do to students.

Also, Derek Nolan TD admitted the Labour party had broken promises made pre-election pledging to reverse the registration fee hike and grant cuts made in the last budget.

We believe they, as public representatives, need to put their constituents before their party and protect those that at the brunt of their vicious austerity measures and not mindlessly vote for what their parties put forward but vote for what is right for society. We also believe that the Government TDs should be held accountable for promises they made pre-election, and to directly promise something the refuse to deliver is an insult to democracy and the Irish people.

Ógra Shinn Féin PRO Sean MacDonnacha said “If the Government feels the need to further deny students access to education and promote the economic brain drain that was left by the previous Government, they will in effect break the back of Irish society by leaving us without an educated workforce through copper-fastening the lack of opportunity which will see Irish youth emigrate and/or not be able to further their education to be qualified for many jobs”

“Sinn Féin believes education is a right and not a privilege and before the budget, Sinn Féin will submit a pre-budget submission is which we will outline our proposals and we hope that the Government take our proposals on board that will show there is a fairer and more equal way of doing things.”

Derry Ógra protest Israeli piracy

Members of Ógra Shinn Féin, Sinn Féin and Derry Friends of Palestine took to the streets of Derry on Friday, November 4th to attend an Emergency demo held in the Guildhall square in support of the MV Saoirse freedom flotilla travelling to Gaza, on which Irish and other activists were onboard.

The MV Saoirse, had on board two Sinn Féin activists from Belfast, John Mallon and Phil McCullough the emergency demo was called as Israeli forces were approaching the Irish and Canadian ship, the Tahrir. Banners and posters were present from both Derry Friends of Palestine and Ógra Sinn Féin Doire. The crowd was addressed, by speeches from chairperson of Derry Friends of Palestine Sinead MacLochlainn. Also Charlie McMenamin and Sinn Féin councillor Gerry MacLochlainn, who both were onboard the MV Saoirse on the Freedom Flotilla 2 when it was sabotaged in June of this year.

Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson, Criona O’Hara-vice chair said: “The emergency demo organised by Derry Friends of Palestine came in light of Israeli forces approaching the MV Saoirse, the Irish ship to Gaza. Young Republicans from this city came out and showed their support for people of the people onboard the Irish and Canadian ships, leaflets were handed out to passersby. Those onboard the ships were taken into the custody of Israeli authorities for entering Israel illegally, although they never entered Israeli waters, but were in fact arrested on international waters. We demand that they are released without charge. “

Large Attendance at Hunger Strike Parade

The rebel city of Cork turned out in large numbers on Sunday to remember and pay tribute to Irelands Hunger strikers. This included Cork native Terence McSwiney who died whilst imprisoned in and English gaol in 1920. The parade was timed to coincide with the 30th Anniversary of the 10 H-Block martyrs who died in 1981.

Amongst those in attendance was a delegation from Ogra Shinn Fein in Tyrone. Demonstrating the strong link between Cork and Tyrone was a banner from West Tyrone Ogra bearing the name of Cork native Dermot Crowley, who the cumann was named after, alongside deceased Tyrone Ogra activist Paula Murphy.

The march formed up at Connolly Hall and proceeded to the United Irishmen monument at grand parade.The MacCurtain/McSwiney and Carrick on Suir Republican Flute Bands provided the music. A large number of Republican banners were also evident. As the parade made its way through the bustling streets of Cork it attracted huge interest from passers by.

At the United Irishmen monument local Sinn Fein Councillor Mick Nugent chaired proceedings. This began with the reading of the Hunger Strike Roll of Honour as well as a rendition of the Rhythm of Time by Bobby Sands.

Malachy McCreesh, brother of Armagh Hunger Striker Raymond then took to the podium. He spoke passionately about the lead up to and on the 1981 Hunger Strike. His vivid and raw recollections of the time drew a large crowd of passers by to stop and listen to the proceedings.
Seanna Walsh, who was the main speaker spoke of the unfinished work for Irish Republicans in 2011 to ensure the vision of the 1981 Hungerstrikers becomes a reality.

To conclude proceedings former blanketman and 1983 escapee Tony Kelly alongside Tony McNally, both from the Spirit of Freedom band gave a powerful rendition of 'The Peoples Own MP'.

Speaking following the commemoration Stevie McGahan, from the Dermot Crowley/Paula Murphy Ogra Cumann in West Tyrone said:

'We were proud to be in the Rebel City today for this commemoration. The strong bond between Cork and Tyrone was particularly evident today. Our own local Ogra cumann is named after Cork native IRA Volunteer Dermot Crowley who died far from his own home in 1973 in Omagh. We are proud to march with Dermot on our banner when we travel to various events throughout Ireland.

'Todays commemoration remembered Irelands Hunger Strikers and I was particularly honoured to listen to Malachy McCreesh and Seanna Walsh who spoke of their own personal memories of the time and the task that we face into. That is ensuring the Republic for which the Hunger strikers gave their lives is achieved in our time. Certainly Young Republicans in Ogra Shinn Fein are determined to play our part in this mammoth task.

'It is furthermore clear that we have support throughout the island in our endeavours whether that be Tyrone, Cork, Antrim, Galway or Kilkenny. And it is with such support that we can achieve the 32 County Socialist Republic for which our Hunger Strikers died for.

Foreword

Sinn Féin’s National Youth Strategy is the product of an extensive period of reflection, discussion, consultation and debate within the party.
It marks a step-change in our approach to youth engagement and development and puts youth very firmly at the heart of the Republican struggle.

It is intended to provide a clear framework for youth activism, to facilitate the growth and popularisation of republican politics amongst young people in Ireland today.
This will mean relating the republican vision of a united Ireland that provides equality of opportunity and equality of welfare to the everyday lives of young people, and communicating it to them in a language they can understand.

It will mean providing solutions, and providing hope, whether that’s to the young person leaving school without basic literacy and numeracy skills or to those completing third level education; to those faced with unemployment or to those looking to start a business.

The National Youth Strategy provides the template for a structured and focussed approach. It envisages a youth structure which is organised, well informed and active in its community.
One that is professional and flexible, creative and dynamic, resolute and determined. Above all, it provides young republicans with the opportunity to shape the next phase of struggle.

1) Introduction

Young people have always played an indispensible part in the Republican struggle.

Every generation of Irish men and women have played their role in shaping the Ireland they live in from the United Irishmen to Na Fianna Éireann and from the hunger strikers to our young political activists of today.

The present time presents us with new challenges and new opportunities. The absence of conflict, and the evolving nature of political struggle has led to a feeling that there is a less of an urgent need for revolutionary political activism among the public.

On the other hand, it is many generations since Irish Republicanism enjoyed as much popular support as it does now. This creates new opportunities for us and opens new doors for us.

To take full advantage of these opportunities, to develop our project in to the future and to combat apathy towards political activism, one ingredient is key; Youth.

If we are to build and sustain SF as we enter a new decade of struggle we need to develop a coherent, holistic and inclusive youth strategy that captures the revolutionary zeal of Irish youth, harnessing their passion and vibrancy to progressive republican activity, and enhancing our political project in the process.

We want young people to be able to look back on this period in years to come, and to be able to identify their part in the key political developments of this generation, and to be able to recall that a vibrant republican youth movement was central to creating the political spectaculars which defined the era.

This strategy is the culmination of a number of month’s intensive discussion debate and planning. It is a strategy developed by young people for young people.

This is intended to be the beginning of a new era in youth engagement among republicans, and to make Sinn Féin the key party as far as young people are concerned. But this document alone will not do that. For this document to have any effect, it will require that all republicans, and particularly young republicans, take on the youth project as a key priority for the party nationally and locally, to take ownership of this strategy, and to bring this project to young people in every corner of this island.

2) Process

The National Youth Committee (NYC) was established in 2010 under the national chairpersons department. The purpose of the NYC as detailed in its terms of reference:

‘To review and assess all existing republican youth development structures and initiatives, including Ógra and college cumainn; and identify how these can be changed, and or, improved upon.’

The National Youth Committee, took it upon themselves to fulfil the objectives set out in the terms of reference. Following discussion and consultation with a broad range of activists of all ages a series of reports were presented to a national youth conference on the future of Republican Youth in Ballybough Community Centre.

The conference commissioned a subgroup to develop on the debates and engagement up to that point, and to develop it into a cohesive, far sighted strategy, which would bring Sinn Féins engagement with young people to a new stage.

This document represents the fruit of that process, and comes with the endorsement of the Ard Chomhairle and of Ógra, and with a clear commitment from the leadership fo the party to provide whatever support they can to ensure that this vision outlined in this document in this strategy becomes a reality.

3) Strategic Framework

At the outset of this process, a vision, and a set of objectives were agreed upon to provide a strategic framework for the work of the National Youth Committee and to provide definition to the development of a youth strategy and to guide how Sinn Féin engages and works with young people.

To position Sinn Féin as a radical, progressive and relevant political alternative for Irish young people. To maximise the relevance of Sinn Féin by listening to, engaging and building alliances with young people.

To promote a progressive vision for the future which cherishes and guarantees the hopes, rights and aspirations of our young people. ‘’

Objectives

* To popularise republicanism and the Party’s national strategic objectives.

* To encourage, engage and mobilise ever increasing numbers of young Irish citizens in support of national and democratic objectives.

* To develop political strategies and campaign programmes which reflect the needs and realities facing young people today.

* To put in place appropriate and cohesive organisational modes which are integrated with the wider national Party structures.

* To bring renewed innovation, imagination and energy to the Sinn Féin project.

* To promote the credibility of youth affairs within Sinn Féin and the overall republican struggle.

* To empower young people in a changing Ireland.

These objectives will bring definition to a single youth strategy which guides SF’s communication, engagement with and outreach towards youth in modern Ireland.

This framework represents a new strategic development in the party’s national work programme.

4) Structure

The development of a National Youth Strategy involved a number of discussions related to how youth activity was structured, and it related to the work of the party at large. In acknowledging the significant amount of work that had been carried out by various youth structures over many years, it was agreed that there was a need for a re-evaluation of how to structure youth development within the party, to ensure that party development was a central part of the work of the party, and to ensure the most effective possible delivery of the strategy.

Central to this was the idea that youth development work had to be led by, and driven by, young people, and needed to have the full support of the party, as well as good communication with the party.

On that basis, it was agreed that the National Youth Committee had to be the key body within the party as regards youth development and engagement. It has to act as a strategic reference point for activists, and it will have responsibility for setting the strategic and political objectives of the youth development project, and co-ordinating all youth activity

Naturally the makeup of the National Youth Committee allows for young people to choose their own leadership, as well as attempting to be representative of the party as a whole.

A third of the National Youth Committee will be elected by activists at an annual conference, and a third will be appointed on behalf of the party leadership by the party chair, under whose department the committee falls. An additional third will be selected by the two thirds already in place. The chair of the National Youth Committee will be an activist with a keen insight into youth affairs both within the party and in general, and will be appointed by the party chair.

It is naturally essential that the voice of young people within the party is heard at the highest levels within the party, and therefore the National Youth Committee will have representation on the Ard Chomhairle.

However, while the NYC is tasked with setting the political and strategic objectives for the youth project, there is clearly a need for particular bodies to deliver the functional, mechanical aspects of the strategy, and to bring it in to effect.

The strategy recognises the very different nature of organising among young people within, on the one hand, colleges and third level institutions, and on the other, within the community at large. This was based on a general consensus among youth activists expressed throughout the process.

Therefore it was agreed to develop different work plans for both the colleges and for the general community. These are entitled the ‘Coláistí’ programme, and the ‘Ógra’ programme.

With a view to the effective delivery of the workplans, and of the strategy generally, it was agreed that there should be a co-ordinating group for each of these workplans. Crucially, however, it was felt essential to guard against the development of two entirely separate youth wings, and that the entire youth project had to be tightly bound together, whilst taking consideration of the different nature of the struggle in the colleges and in the community. It was agreed therefore that the work of these two workplans would come converge under the central project identity and objectives of Sinn Féin-Republican Youth.

Core to this intention is the desire to push the project forward with significant, exciting flagship projects, to which all youth activists should contribute.

5) Ógra

Ógra Shinn Féin has played a central role within the republican project since it was established. That only fourteen years after its foundation, we have seen many leadership figures emerge from its ranks, such as Pearse Doherty, Daithi McKay and Toiréasa Ferris, is testament to its contribution.

The need for effective leadership and engagement with young people in working class and rural communities is more crucial than ever. This work, which will be undertaken hand in hand with local party structures and the ODU, will be the central focus of the Ógra workplan.

There is a co-ordinating group established to deliver this workplan. The co-ordinating group will have as its focus the roll out of the strategic vision and framework of the NYC. It comprises organisers selected on a regional basis to cover all of Ireland, who will each have responsibility for working closely with local areas in the furtherance of the youth strategy. It ought to be the body which can establish best practice for local areas to engage with, to organise, and to campaign with young people. The best practice and the criteria for it must however be constantly reviewed, re-evaluated, and renewed.

It will assist local areas in formulating and implementing youth strategies, which follow the patterns of best practice which have been agreed at the level of co-ordinating group. It further ought to keep the success of those local strategies under review.

It will the key support structure for those with key responsibilities for youth in local areas, and should provide those activists with training and education in order to equip them to take on crucial roles in the implementation of local youth strategies, as well as providing them with advice support and resources where possible and suitable.

Its work will be heavily co-ordinated with the work of local areas and of the ODU, in developing youth strategies on a local basis, that are integral to the workplans of the party in that area, and working to the same objectives, while nonetheless providing a clear focus on the urgency of encouraging young people in to the party.

6) SF Coláistí

The colleges create a unique set of circumstances for political activism. It is the largest concentration of young people available for any serious length of time. Where young people travel to attend university, they often don’t return home very often and summer aside will struggle to tie in with their own local SF structure. On the other hand, they are well placed to get very involved in the campus and the locality of their college.

Sinn Féin is active within most of Ireland’s main universities. Over recent years SF has learned a great deal from our dealings with colleges, and over time, are building up knowledge of the best practice models for organising in colleges, however there is still much work to be done.

There is also a co-ordinating group which has been established with a view to ensuring the delivery of the colleges workplan. This co-ordinating group shall have the responsibility to co-ordinating the work of the various colleges, and to encourage the implementation of best practice nationally, to set up and maintain College Cumainn in co-operation with local members, directing the fresher’s project, developing capacity within colleges and professionalising our project in the colleges.

The colleges in Uladh shall be the responsibility of the Colleges Chomhairle Ceantair which has developed in recent years, and a similar model will be applied in Dublin which has a high concentration of colleges. In other areas the co-ordinating group shall work closely with the directorates, and the ODU to ensure that college cumainn are operating in line with the workplans, and are active.

A College forum meeting twice a year will be convened to bring together a wider group of college activists before the fresher’s events and later in the academic year to collaborate on developing joint college events with national participation.

7) Flagship projects

The idea of a flagship project is to bring something new and different to the workings of the NYC. It’s essential purpose is to challenge young people’s thinking as regards the struggle and politics generally, be they young people within the party or young people generally.

These projects are intended to be the catalyst for the step change within SF by creating a focal point for all young people, across both work plans, and thereby maximising comradeship, cohesion and relationship building among and between young activists whilst projecting an attractive image to other young people outside organised republican activity.

A number of these flagship, signature type projects have been identified, and work has begun in some of these areas, however, the development of these flagship projects are central to the development of this strategy, and will be an on-going project

These are intended to include events such as the below, and many more besides.

* Large scale mobilisations of young people to Ard Fheiseanna

* Mass protests and mobilisations

* An annual youth congress event

* Training and capacity building events

* International events and delegations

* A regular series of weekend residentials.

* Outdoor/ large scale concerts

* The development of a social scene to cater for young republicans in large urban centres.

Flagship projects will be complementary to all the work plans and projects. They will require the full support of the aprty at large, and should not be left to the young people of the party alone; these are to be taken on as significant projects for the party.

They should foster a collective political identity among young republicans within the framework of Sinn Féin Republican Youth and seek to excite the imagination of other youth not yet involved in our struggle.

8) Setting priorities and delivering the workplans

Given the crucial nature of this work it is important that we set realisable, realistic and tangible targets. It is incumbent upon us to be ambitious.

The key priority of this strategy should be to ensure that Sinn Féin would become the most attractive party for young people to join.

Secondly we must aim for all young people involved in the party to identify with the youth project and to work to implement it.

Externally we must seek to create a wider pool of republican minded young people who will identify with Sinn Féin as their voice, and see it as interested in youth.

Finally , it is imperative that all areas will have in place, and are promoting effective local youth engagement strategies, and that there are youth engagements strategies in place for all third level institutions. This work then needs to be overseen by the delivery bodies of the National Youth Committee, the co-ordinating groups.

The proposed strategy needs to convert increased youth activism and youth work into increased membership of Sinn Féin among young people - and by so doing increase interaction between young people and Sinn Féin.

It is essential that we produce a generation of activists who are articulate considered and revolutionary young leaders, capable of promoting our message among young people with the benefit of comprehensive political education and training, as well as proper mentoring and support.

As noted above, both the Coláistí co-ordinating group and the Ógra co-ordinating group have developed detailed workplans intended to give effect to the strategic framework and strategy set out by the National Youth Committee, and delivering the youth project to more and more people.

This involves many different projects and initiatives which will vary in scale and in nature, but will all contribute to the development of the youth strategy, and contribute to its integration in to the party’s work generally.

These work plans will include, among other initiatives, projects such as

* The beginning of the development of a comprehensive youth focused policy platform, headed up by 26 county spokesperson on Youth Affairs, and member of the National Youth Committee, Senator Kathryn Reilly. This will be a policy platform developed by young people and for young people, and will provide us with an excellent tool in engaging with young people all over the country.

* Beginning of set of regular monthly evening events in major urban centres, with a political talk discussion debate followed by a well-advertised and prepared musical/social event.

* creative campaigning essential, stunts, and use of new Media.

* Comprehensive engagement with local areas, to promote the youth strategy, and to begin the process of local areas developing their own youth strategies.

* Initial steps towards the planning of a concert/festival type event.

* A National Youth Conference

* The development of a joined-up and sophisticated approach to new media. This will be an essential area for youth activists in the time to come, and could prove an invaluable tool in advancing our struggle.

* A greater emphasis on youth at the Ard Fheis, using it to promote SF as a youthful party, with a youthful membership. This is to be achieved by large mobilisations, entertainment events, talks and fringe events, and the creation of a social focal point for young people within the Ard Fheis.

* International Delegation/projects with the purpose of forging strong links of comradeship both with fellow Sinn Féin activists, and with International activists, and to educate activists as to the international nature of struggle.

* Events to support the ongoing work of the United Ireland taskforce, including college focused surveys and public talks, campaigning for all Ireland voting rights, and developing the discussion on Irish Unity among young people through a series of engagements and conferences.

* Events to mark International Womens day and the role of women in our struggle.

Conclusion

The Irish Republican vision as set out in the 1916 Proclamation and the Democratic Programme of the First Dáil is as relevant today as it ever was.
The role of this generation of young republicans must be to translate that vision into the 21st century context, to see it realised, and in doing so to complete the work that so many sacrificed so much for.
To do this we will need to be active and energetic, and plan our way forward in a strategic and measured way.
The National Youth Strategy has the potential to deliver this. It provides a framework to build youth structures right across the island, to increase our capacity, and through flagship projects, to redefine youth politics in Ireland.
Through the work of young activists in their local communities or institutes of education, right across Ireland, we can place the ideals of the Irish Republic at the heart of youth politics.

There will undoubtedly be challenges ahead, but the opportunity we have to make progess is unprecedented. Sinn Féin has made political, organisational and electoral gains North and South.
The commitment, enthusiasm and drive of young peopleto build on those gains will be key to our ultimate success.

Activity is the currency.
This National Youth Strategy provides the template.

Ógra welcomes ETA annoucement

Ógra Shinn Féin has welcomed the announcement from ETA (Euskadi ta Askatasuna) that it is to end its armed activity.

In its statement, ETA declared its intention of embracing the resolution reached by delegates at the recent conference in San Sebastian, which Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams attended. Ógra Shinn Féin's International Officer, Daithi Byrne said;

"This is a truly historical declaration and a brave move by ETA. The Spanish and French governments should take this opportunity to engage with ETA and the Basque people. This statement is very clear. There is a desire for a peaceful and democratic solution to the long-running conflict. Both the French and Spanish governments need to embrace this monumental step and set about a process of dialogue and peacemaking. We hope that the Basque people will have a right to vote for candidates from any political party they decide, free from Spanish interference and repression. We are closely watching the developments in the Basque country and we wish our Comrades there the very best."

With this declaration, Euskadi ta Askatasuna, the Basque socialist revolutionary organisation for national liberation, wishes to give news of its decision:

Eta considers that the international conference that has recently taken place in the Basque country is an initiative of enormous significance.

The agreed resolution includes all the elements for an integral solution of the conflict, and it has attained the support of a wide spectrum of the Basque society and the international community.

A new political time is emerging in the Basque country. We have an historical opportunity to find a just and democratic solution for the centuries old political conflict. Dialogue and agreement should outline the new cycle, over violence and repression. The recognition of the Basque country and the respect for the will of the people should prevail over imposition.

This has not been an easy road. The cruelty of the fight has taken away the lives of many comrades. Many others are still suffering in prison and in exile. Our recognition and deepest tribute goes out to them.

From here on the road will not be easy either. Facing the imposition that still exists, every step, every achievement, will be the result of the effort and fight of Basque citizens.

During these years the Basque country has accumulated the necessary experience and strength to address this path and it also has the determination for doing it. It is time to look at the future with hope. It is also time to act with responsibility and courage.

Therefore, Eta has decided the definitive cessation of its armed activity. Eta calls upon the Spanish and French governments to open a process of direct dialogue with the aim of addressing the resolution of the consequences of the conflict and, thus, to overcome the armed confrontation.

Through this historical declaration, Eta shows its clear, solid and definitive commitment.

Lastly, Eta calls upon the Basque society to commit to this process until freedom and peace are achieved.

National Launch of Campaign to Elect Martin McGuinness

The campaign to elect Martin mcGuinness as President will begin in earnest this weekend with the official launch of the campaign. There will be a rally in Dublin at 7pm this Saturday, in the Pillar Room of the Rotunda, in Parnell Square.

A large youth presence is essential, to promote mcGuinness as a candidate with the support of the youth of Ireland, and its important that there is a presence there from all parts of the country. Bí ann and pass on the message.

Bilbao Kukutza Demolished

Anyone who was on the Ógra mobilisations to the Basque country in the past number of years will be familiar with the Kukutza or Gaztetxea in Bilbao . The Kukutza was demolished last week in a move which was undertaken against the wishes of the local population and in favor of local property developer. The huge military operation needed to undertake the demolition was just a small measure of how unpopular the move was amongst the majority of the local population.

A number of people had been arrested in the Kukutza last Wednesday as a forced eviction was undertaken by heavily armed members of the Basque regional police. Plastic Batons rounds were also fired on this occasion, injuring several people. In the days following the demolition over 30 people were arrested and many more injured in demonstrations.

The cultural and social centre was equipped with a public bar, climbing wall, clothes shop, Gym, computer suite, conference facilities as well as accommodation facilities and cooking and restaurant facility. The building was used by the local community for various classes and activities. The Kukutza was also a hive of activity no matter what time of the day it was.

Ógra members will be familiar with the building because it served as a vocal point for a number of delegations. It also provided accommodation for two Ógra delegations for two years; in 2007 and 2008. In this time over 40 members of Ógra passed through and stayed in the building. We were astounded at the diversity of activities going on in the building and the amount of development being undertaken in the building. Throughout our stay we were afforded the greatest hospitality and were made very welcome throughout.

The network of Youth Houses or Gaztetxea in the Basque country was an impressive aspect of the Basque struggle. It provided many young people with a facility they could call their own. It was an outlet to channel their energies and time and provided an unrivalled service to the local communities. The Kukutza in Bilbao was recognised as one of the most successful in the network of Youth Houses.

I stayed in the facility on a number of visits to the Basque country. The last time was during Easter 2009. After completing the grueling mendi martxa -or mountain march- I stayed on the building for two nights along with other international representatives from Sweden and Norway . Like me they were amazed at the ever continuing development of the Kukutza.

It was with sadness that I learned from a great friend from the Basque country some two months ago that the building was ear marked for closure and demolition. The groups based in the building were served with eviction notices. Just last Thursday over 5,000 people came onto the streets of Bilbao in protest at the demolition. Over the weekend as protests continued many protestors were arrested and injured as the Basque police opened fire on protestors.

I think I can speak for the Ógra representatives who visited the building when I say that we were saddened at the news of its demolition. It was truly a unique building.
No matter what is put in its place it will go no way to replacing what the Kukutza meant to local people. It will also be no substitute for the good work that was undertaken in the building for a wide cross section of the local population. Once again big business and wealthy property developers, supported by the ruling elite have trampled upon the ordinary working class people.

As the Presidential Election race begins to pick up the momentum, the work of Sinn Féin and Ógra Shinn Féin has put the issue of voting rights for those in the North on the political landscape, and it is being discussed, on National newspapers, on websites and on local radios stations.

You can help the campaign, and it will only take a few minutes.

Now is the time to escalate the campaign and to push this campaign further. We need to put the election candidates, and elected representatives under pressure. Please write to the various candidates highlighting why the need for this to happen. Particularly write if you are a northern citizen, and indicate that you would like to vote, yet are denied the opportunity.

The subject of Irish citizens voting rights is on the agenda and some candidates have proclaimed their support for the idea for full voting rights for recent emigrants.
I believe many of those who have emigrated have left due to the economic factors on the island of Ireland and should definitely have a say in their native country’s future and who controls their fiscal policy in order to make Ireland a place in which they can have the opportunities they did not have on their emigration should they wish to return.
I feel compelled to ask, as an Irish citizen who was born in Belfast, what about the voting rights of Irish citizens in the North? The fact that the title of the office, the ‘President of Ireland’ does not allow for all citizens of this island to have their say on who that president should be is undemocratic and a complete contradiction.
The current situation on voting rights means that the president in office at this moment, Mary McAleese could not vote for herself were she living in her hometown.
Since the partition of this island, the government in Dublin is seen by many in the North as an institution that is and was supposed to protect Irish citizens in the times of political turmoil. In reality, there was little to no protection or intervention politically, diplomatically or otherwise in the grand scheme of things. In the aftermath of the Good Friday Agreement and the increasingly good community relations, now is the time more than ever for the political institutions to reach out to northern citizens, who expect, and are entitled to expect legal protection, and yet they have no representation. It is essential in the interests of peace and reconciliation to make this happen.
This is not a controversial idea, and it received broad support from the Oireachtas Good Friday Implementation ctte, and has received support from spokespersons from most major parties, including Fine Gael, the SDLP, Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil.
As long as the franchise of the Irish state extends only as far as Dundalk, the office holder cannot be properly called ' A President of Ireland'

If we can truly call the office the president of Ireland, then surely Irish people living just a few kilometres up the road should have the right to vote for their president.

Mary McAleese grew up in Belfast, if she had remained there she would
have never even got the chance to vote in the election of her
president never mind become one herself. In mnay countries like the
USA where the presidential role is much more powerful anyone with a US
passport can vote no matter where in the world they are but my Irish
neighbour, my cousins, my friends who live just a short trip away on
this very island have no right at all. Please give your support to
this call and raise this issue in the Dáil and elsewhere.

Youth Strategy launched at Ard Fheis

Ógra Shinn Fein activists, college activists and an array of young republicans from across Ireland recently gathered at this year’s historic Ard Fheis in Belfast to see the official launch of the new national youth policy. The document, which was presented by Senator Kathryn Reilly, Martin McGuinness MLA, mayor of Belfast Niall Ó Donnghaile and former hungerstriker Leo Green, aims at increasing the capacity of Ógra and college cumainn throughout Ireland, and improving the appeal of Sinn Féin among young people generally.

The event, which was chaired by Kathryn Reilly, kicked off with a few words from Martin McGuiness on the importance of young people to our struggle, and ended with a very emotive and inspiring speech from Leo Green on the hunger strike.

Later on that night the activists attended a reception hosted by Belfast city mayor, Niall Ó Donnghaile in the emerald road house, with special guest, republican and Irish language enthusiast heavy weight boxer Martin Rogan.

Speaking on the event and the importance of the time ahead, Cuige Uladh co-ordinator Cllr Pádraig Quinn said;

"The event held last Friday was the culmination of over 12 months of hard work carried out by Ógra Shinn Féin and the newly formed national youth committee. Over 100 young people were in attendance at different periods of the day, many of which left re-energized and focused for the time ahead.

It is an extremely important document, refocusing the party’s dealings with youth and placing it firmly at the fore.

'I think it is important that we begin to see a new generation of young people emerge from the ranks of Ógra and take up leadership positions. Whether it be in local council, the assembly, the Dáil , local cumainn or CC, young people need to begin to take on serious positions, all the while learning from more experienced activists and applying new skills, a fresh set of eyes and new energy to our ever-changing struggle for freedom.'

This Ard Fheis very clearly had a youthful, vibrant feeling. There were large amounts of young people present throughout the course of the weekend with many young republicans contributing greatly to the debate and discusion.

Young activists such as Mayor Cllr Niall Ó Donnghaile and Senator Kathryn Reilly played key roles chairing events and addrising the crowds, while many ogra activists where elected to sinn féins national executive.

In the coming weeks the Ógra Shinn Féin national executive will be working upon implementing a work plan. This will be the basis of our activism and campaigns for the months ahead and will see a new beginning for the republican youth movement by initiating a intensified engagement with local party structures throughout the country".

Among the many interesting and motivating fringe events heldat this years historic Ard Fheis, was the launch of a new beginning for theparty and its dealings with the issue of LGBT rights. The event, a panel discussionconsisting of Catriona Ruane and Eoin O’Brien, saw a wide spectrum of interestedparty activists and community groups come together to discuss the current Sinn Féinpolicy on LGBT rights which was drafted in the mid 1990s.

The panel discussion was organized by the newly formed LGBT SinnFéin committee and signaled the launch of consultation in view of developing a innovative,dynamic and comprehensive Sinn Féin LGBT policy. The optimism and drive of those in attendancewas clear to be seen with many congratulating Sinn Féin on its new commitment.

Speaking on the event and the issue of LGBT rights committeemember and Ógra Cuige Uladh organiser Cllr Pádraig Quinn said:

“The discussion was a very informative and up beat event, withboth the speakers and community groups participating in active discussionaround the current policy and what lies ahead.

This is an issue that Sinn Féin feels very passionate about.One of our core fundamental principles, as republicans is that of equality.We believe that the LGBT community is wrongly beingdiscriminated against in many aspects of life and that the current legislationdoes not go far enough to protect their rights. It is important now that as theleading voice in republicanism, Sinn Féin takes a pro-active approach in LGBTmatters.

The new committee which will very soon see its AGM iscommitted to establishing a program of work which will not only see way to anew policy document, but challenge the current legislation and those who deemit worthy.

Members of Sinn Féin and Ógra Shinn Féin organised a protest in Derry City Centre today regarding the lack of Presidential voting rights for Irish citizens living in the 6 counties. In order to maximise impact the ÓSF campaigns team in Derry made a banner, posters and around 300 booklets detailing the campaign to extend voting rights.

Ógra Shinn Féin Doire Campaigns officer Ruairí McLaughlin said "We are Irish, we are Republican and we demand the right to have say in the election of our President. A President for all? How so, if as Irish citizens in the north we are denied the right to elect this head of state? It is a ridiculous state of affairs when the friends and family of current President Mary McAleese who grew up with her and still live in Belfast weren't even allowed to vote in her elections? We need to hear from Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, the SDLP and all other parties who proclaim nationalist and republican ideals, where do they stand on this issue? The extension of voting rights to citizens in the north is a natural outworking of the Good Friday Agreement and an essential step in the reunification of our country".

Ógra Shinn Féin were out on the streets of Derry on Saturday (27th August) supporting the second annual Foyle Pride parade. They were joined by Sinn Féin activists including Junior Minister Martina Anderson MLA, and Cllr Paul Fleming.

The thousands who marched in support of LGBT rights made their way from the Waterside Station to Guildhall Square, and were greeted along the way by cheers and rapturous applause from an enthusiastic crowd of shoppers and supporters.

Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Joe Dunn said,

“Young republicans were proud to come out in support of LGBT rights today and the message went out loud and clear from the pride parade that Derry will stand up for equality and diversity. Equality is a cornerstone of Irish republicanism, and we will always lead the fight and stand shoulder to shoulder with all who work to achieve and uphold this basic human right.”

Members of Ógra from all over Connacht attended the Galway Pride Parade on Saturday along with hundreds of others marching to celebrate not only the strides made over the years by the LGBT community but promote the unity of the LGBT community in their fight for equality.

Rousing speeches were made that celebrated the recent news of New York’s recent legalisation of Gay Marriage and the achievements the LGBT community has made over the past year in Galway and worldwide but remembrance and tribute were also paid to those in Ireland who were exiled from their homes as the southern government criminalised homosexual activity.

Conor Stitt, chair of the NUIG cumann said “Sinn Féin are a party that is fully focused on building an Ireland of equals. Sinn Féin, unlike many other parties do not confess to deny citizens their equal rights because a person’s sexuality. We believe that equality is a pillar of democracy and is laid before is the 1916 Proclamation and the Democratic Programme of the First Dáil.

We chose to attend this march so we could show our solidarity to those fighting for LGBT rights but also, show that Sinn Féin is there to fight their corner in the Oireachtas, Stormont or in Local or County council. We were the only political party to attend. While the pride for many was for to be ‘gay and proud’, many Ógra members were proud to march alongside so many committed social activists on LGBT issues”

FG/Lab need to act to provide employment opportunities for school leavers

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Seán Crowe TD joined members of Ógra Shinn Féin on Tuesday the 17th, to protest at the limited prospects for leaving cert students, and the need for the Government to invest in a stimulus package.

Deputy Crowe said the Government must invest in a jobs creation package to stimulate the economy and to give our young people a future in their own country.

“Thousands of leaving certificate students will get their results tomorrow but the unfortunate reality for many of them is that if they cannot afford or do not want to go to college the only option open to them is emigration. That is the sad reality we live in today in Ireland.

“The failure of this and the previous government to invest in a proper economic stimulus and job creation package has extended the unemployment crisis.

“Despite the promises of both Fine Gael and Labour in the run up to the general election they have delivered a miserable jobs initiative with only €29 million of expenditure on capital projects and €11 million on additional training places.

“Fine Gael promised an investment of €7 billion to create 100,000 jobs. Labour promised a jobs fund of €500 million and a Strategic Investment Bank with funds of €2 billion.

“Sinn Fein believes that the government must invest €2 billion from the National Pension Reserve Fund to fast track labour intensive infrastructure projects and to assist small and medium sized businesses to save and create jobs.

“The government should stop using taxpayers’ money to bailout unguaranteed bondholders. Rather they should be using this money to stimulate Ireland’s domestic economy.”

Young republicans from the length and breadth of the country gathered in Camlough last weekend for the National Hunger Strike Youth camp, to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike.

The weekend came as the culmination of commemorative events organised by young republicans over many months

30 years to the day after a 24 year old Martin Hurson died on Hunger Strike after 46 days, the 13th of July saw young republicans the length and breadth of the country active in remembering the Hunger strikes.

In recognising the role played by young people in the hunger strike, and the young age of those who died on hunger strike, young republicans participated in events as diverse as book readings, public talks, film showings, banner drops, white line pickets, commemorations, football competitions and demonstrations. The actions involved young people all over the country, with actions taking part in Athlone, Mayo, Tyrone, Belfast, Cork, Donegal, Derry, Meath, Dublin, Wexford and Sligo.

The same week saw young republicans in Donegal participate in the production of Laurence McKeown's acclaimed play 'Laughter of our Children' (above).
These form part of a year long acknowledgment and commemoration of the role which young people played in the hunger strike and which they are still playing today, a point which is of particular significance with the advent of the National Youth Strategy, to be officially launched at the Ard Fheis.

This effort which involed the day of action, as well as other commemorations and reconstructions had as its highlight the National Hunger Strike Youth Camp.

Campers arrived in good numbers on the Friday evening, and in good humour, despite the mixed weather.

After the camp was set up, activists were welcomed to Camlough and the camp was officially opened before the contingent travelled to the Barcroft Community Centre in Newry for a talk on the Legacy of the Hunger Strike with Gerry McConville and Jim Gibney. A fascinating discussion touched on issues such as the feelings of the families and the role which they played, and the relationship with prison warders before during and after the Hunger Strike.

Following the well attended and emotional event activists returned to camlough for a lively function, music provided courtesy of activists themselves, with Dave Collins and Daith Kellaghan being particularly to the floor, however with no contributions from Liam 'I have a cold' Lappin.
Further entertainment was provided by the regular entry of a bat to the function room. Speculation that the Bat was sent by Jim Allister MLA to observe the camp remains unconfirmed.

The Saturday morning began with activists visiting the Hunger Strike Exhibition located in the Old School building in Camlough, where Raymond McCreesh himself had gone to school. The exhibition of Hunger Strike artefacts from 1981 as well as information about their context and previous hunger strikes has toured around the country over recent months, but had been greatly added to with local artefacts, including personal effects of Raymond McCreesh, letters to and from his family, reconstructed cells.

In a similar vein, activists then embarked upon a historical bus tour of South Armagh with ex-prisoner Thomas Marren. The tour brought them from Raymond mcCreesh's grave in Camlough, to Mullaghbane, to Crossmaglen, and back, taking in sights such as former British Army Barrack sites, scenes of ambushes, monuments, and involving discussions of the resistance shown in South Armagh over many generations, and indeed the earlier history of the area, which was an area of great political significance in early Ireland.

Following a short break upon returning to Camlough, former hunger striker, Laurence mcKeown, spoke on the way that the Hunger Strike has been portrayed in the Arts and in literature in 'Artisitic Impressions of the Hunger Strike'. Laurence had co-written the play 'The Laughter of our Children', and the screenplay for the acclaimed H3, and was therefore uniqeuly well positioned to discuss this area. The fascinating discussion noted how the impressions of the hunger strike had shifted significantly over recent years, on account of the development of the assembly, the absence of conflict, and indeed the initiatives of particular artists, such as Steve McQueen and the recent film 'Hunger'. Activists engaged with the discussion to a great extent, and Laurence, challenged all present not to take all regarding the Hunger Strike, or even politics generally, as a given but to question and to find out for themselves.

The final talk of the weekend involved the ongoing developments in the Basque country, with the development of the Abertzale Left, and Bildu. Izaskun Goienetxea of the Irish Basque Solidarity Committees, and a Basque Youth activist, explained to comrades the current situation in the Basque country, the great successes in the recent municipal elections, which showed the political strength and appeal of the nationalist movement, but also the difficulties which still existed as regards state repression, as regards prisoners, and the legal difficulties put in their way by the spanish state. Izaskun signalled that they would take heart from current successes, and intended to develop the movement by ensuring that they would move in tandem with, and on behalf of the community, and that ultimately the community would succeed in reaching their political objectives.

The evening saw further entertainment and music in Camlough, as activists from all over the country took the opportunity to meet other young republicans and develop new friendships.

Sunday the 14th represented one of the most significant days of this year for republicans, as some 20,000 republicans gathered in Camlough to commemorate the sacrifice of the 10 Hunger Strikers, and the role they played in the struggle. It was heartening to see such a large crowd, and indeed a youthful crowd.

The sacrifices of the Hunger Strikers continues to inspire young republicans even today, and stand as remarkable example of selfless commitment to their political cause. Throughout the year young republicans have endeavoured to remember and commemorate them, and will cotinue to do so, and to take inspiration from them for years to come

To mark the 40th Anniversary of the introduction of internment in the 6 counties, Republicans gathered at Free Derry Corner where a rally had been organised by Republican ex-prisoners group Tar Abhaile. The event was chaired by former internee Gerry McCartney.

During the event the unsuspecting crowd was ambushed by members of ÓSF dressed as British Paratroopers and RUC men, certain people in the crowd had been highlight to be 'arrested'. They were pulled from the crowd, forced against Free Derry Wall and a pillow case was pulled over their head. The families of those murdered during the Ballymurphy massacre were also present, to highlight their case people came from behind the wall and symbolised some of those who were murdered and the families who were left to mourn them.

Ógra Shinn Féin in Derry organised an event around the role of youth during the 1981 Hunger Strike as part of the Gasyard Féile. The aim of the event was to show young people from all over the city how youth have led the struggle and to explore the role of young Republicans today. The event also had an international aspect as it was attended by several members of Basque group SEGI.

On the panel sat Ógra Shinn Féin activist Ruairí McLaughlin, Jim Gibney (PA to Assembly member Jennifer McCann), Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McLaughlin and community worker Charles Lamberton.

Speaking afterwards Ruairí McLaughlin who chaired the event hailed it as a huge success "I would like to thank Jim, Elisha and Charles for taking the time to come here tonight. It was very interesting to hear their personal motivations for becoming involved in Republican politics and to hear their personal accounts of the hardship they experienced. It was also good to hear Jim Gibney reaffirming Sinn Féin's position on the ongoing case of Brendan Lillis - he must be released, it is not a political issue, it is a humanitarian issue."

Ógra call for the extension of voting rights to the north

Earlier today Ógra Shinn Féin held a demonstration outside Leinster House demanding that voting rights for the Irish Presidential Election be extended to Irish citizens of the six counties.

Members of ÓSF wearing GAA jerseys from each of Ireland's 32 counties took part in the event with those wearing the colours of the six-county teams wearing gags to symbolize the fact that Irish citizens living in Antrim, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry and Armagh have no say in the election.

Speaking at the event, Dublin Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe, pointed out that under the current rules President Mary McAleese would have been unable to vote for herself. Deputy Crowe also called on each of the Presidential candidates to indicate their position regarding the issue.

Ógra Shinn Féin National Organiser, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, called on the southern government to extend voting rights to Irish citizens living in the six counties in time for the Presedential Election later this year adding that: "as the President of Ireland represents the Irish people, it is only logical that all Irish citizens should have the right to decide on who the president should be."

Ógra calls for the release of Brendan Lillis

Ógra Shinn Féin call for the release of Brendan Lillis who is being held in Maghaberry Prison despite being seriously ill. As an act of compassion Ógra call on Justice Minister David Ford to release Brendan Lillis into the care of his family.

Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann after a recent visit to Brendan Lillis in the prison hospital said,

“He should be released immediately on humanitarian grounds as clearly he is no danger to the public. If he is released he can avail of medical treatment in a hospital setting surrounded by his family, not as currently is the case where he is held in an inadequate room which is virtually a cell as part of the prison hospital clinic.”

Ógra Shinn Féin’s Uladh Organiser, Cllr Padraig Quinn has urged support for this Saturday’s Belfast Pride Parade.

Sinn Féin’s youth wing is calling on the public to support ‘Ireland’s largest Pride Parade.’

The day will kick off with a party in Custom House Square from 12noon, with the parade kicking off at 2pm sharp.

Cllr Quinn said,

“Belfast is host to Ireland’s largest Pride Parade and is a culmination of a weeklong celebration of equality and diversity. It is also the biggest cross community festival in Ireland and last year, almost 17,000 came out on to the streets in support of the LGBT community.”

“Join with us this Saturday in supporting this colourful and vibrant parade. Stand shoulder to shoulder with all the people who are working to build an inclusive society, one that respects equality and diversity.”

The weekend of the 12th to 14th of August will see young republicans from all over the country converge on Camlough in South Armagh for this year’s Hunger Strike Youth Camp.

The Hunger Strikes remain a key moment in recent Irish history and the weekend will be an excellent opportunity for young republicans come together in remembering the Hungerstrikers, and to learn more of that period in our struggle, as well as the opportunity to consider our present struggle.

It will be a weekend of discussion and debate, ceol and craic and all young republicans are encouraged to attend the event, and we are asking all party members to highlight this event to young republicans in your area, and to encourage them to attend. This is a camping type event, and activists will need tents.

There is a small registration cost of £9/€10, which covers buses, functions and other costs.

Tyrone Ógra Shinn Féin take part in Martin Hurson Commemoration

Representatives from Tyrone Ógra Shinn Féin recently attended the Martin Hurson commemoration in Lanesbourough in County Longford, which was held on Sunday. Organised by the North Leinster ‘81 committee the parade took place through the town to the Martin Hurson memorial.
Martin Hurson stood for election in the constituency in 1981 where he received over four and a half thousand votes. Present on Sunday were Martins brother, Brendan and Martins girlfriend, Bernadette.

Led by a republican colour party with music provided by the Burns and Moley Republican Flute Band the parade was attended by a significant crowd from across Leinster and beyond. At the monument local councillor Paul Hogan chaired proceedings. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Republican Movement, Sinn Féin and the ‘81 Committee. There was also a reading of the 1st entry in Bobby Sands' diary as well as a reading of the Hunger Strike Roll of Honour and the 5 demands.Martina Anderson was then introduced as the main speaker for the commemoration. Martina spoke of the groundbreaking events of 1981 and urged those present to leave to commemoration re invigorated and determined to work towards republican objectives so that the cause for which the Hunger Strikers died is realised.

Following the parade Tyrone Ógra spokesperson Peadar McNally said:

'We were proud to be involved in the parade here today in memory of Tyrone Hunger Striker Martin Hurson. Many of the young people involved here today were not alive when the Hunger Strike happened. However the sacrifice of the ten men inspires our generation to take the struggle forward. Throughout Ireland and worldwide tens of thousands will gather this year to remember the 30th anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike and the ten men who died. The names of Bobby Sands, Martin Hurson and the other 8 men who died in 1981 are now listed beside the names of Connolly, Pearse, and Tone and will live on. The only fitting way to pay tribute to the men and women who died is to achieve the republic for which they died. It is then that Irish Republicans will truly honour to memory of Irish men and women who died in the struggle for Irish Freedom.

Dublin Ógra highlight youth emigration

Last Saturday Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin organised an action to highlight the problem of youth emigration from Ireland. Currently we are witnessing the highest levels of emigration that this generation has ever experienced. Every young person has a family member or friend who has emigrated and there is no doubt that many more of the country's youth are considering seeking employment abroad. Dublin Ógra took it upon themselves to highlight the waste of our greatest natural resource, our youth. Their protest involved writing the names of those who have emigrated in chalk on O'Connell Street. The action received a great response from the public with many helping to add the names of their own loved ones to the list.

We would like to express our sadness at the horrific loss of life. We also condemn the senseless violence that has been an attack on the people of Norway and the values that they hold.

New Plaque unveiled to Fian Tobias Molloy

Republican activists from Tyrone gathered in Strabane on Saturday 16th July, the 39th anniversary of the death of recruit Tobias Molloy.

The activists assembled at the spot near the former ‘camel’s hump’ checkpoint, where in 1972, the young Fian was shot dead by a rubber bullet fired by the British crown forces to unveil a new plaque.
Tobias Molloy was 18 years old when, returning from his girlfriend’s home in Lifford, he was struck above the heart by a rubber bullet fired by the British army.

The British propagandists were quick to claim that Tobias was shot while taking part in a riot but these claims were disputed by local eyewitnesses, who were adamant that he was nowhere near the riot, and was shot down in cold blood without reason.

Local youths helped carry the injured Tobias to Lifford hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

As his body was taken home from across the border, accompanied by hundreds of mourners, it was attacked by British soldiers as it passed by their army base. Mourners were forced to fight their way through as they were attacked with batons and rubber bullets, some of which hit the hearse which carried the dead Fianna boy’s coffin.

The funeral which was attended by thousands of people from the West Tyrone area stretched over five miles to the Donneyloop graveyard in Donegal. As the remains reached the cemetery it was surrounded by hundreds of Free State soldiers and Gardaí, who were there under the auspices of preventing an IRA tribute, a tribute that had already been paid before Tobias’s remains left his hometown.

At the unveiling Tobias’ cousin Anne Caldwell spoke about her memories of Tobias as a young man. She described Tobias as a quiet young man who came from an a-political family and because of the events around him he educated himself in Republicanism and then made the decision to join the ranks of the Republican movement.

Also speaking at the unveiling was chair of Strabane Ógra Shinn Féin, John McDermott who thanked everyone for turning out, especially the Molloy family who have supported all events.

John also made a call for young people to get involved in activism within their communities saying;

“It’s great to see so many people here, and more so – so many young people. I would call on young people here to educate yourselves on the brave activities of our past generation of Republican youth, and take inspiration from their example and join in the struggle for independence. There are many avenues in which you can get involved be that joining Sinn Fein and becoming a political activist.”

“Sinn Fein are to the fore in leading our country to reunification and I urge you to get involved. Strabane National Graves are involved in sterling work behind the scenes – they maintain monuments, plaques and graves of our Republican dead. They carry out a crucial part of ensuring the legacy of the fallen volunteers struggle aren’t forgotten. Gael Phobal is central to the promotion of the Irish language in the Strabane area, and the GAA which is a volunteer led, community based organisation that promotes Gaelic games. It is part of the Irish consciousness and plays an influential role in Irish society that extends far beyond the basic aim of promoting Gaelic games. I call on the young people here today to make contact with one – or all of the organisations and play your part in making a better Ireland.”

Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin are getting active on the problem of youth emigration. This Saturday, 23^rd July, they will be holding a protest to highlight the issue. The protest will involve writing the names of those young people who have emigrated in chalk along the walls and streets of Dublin. You too can help. We are asking the public to send us names of those who have emigrated. You can contact us through here or you can leave the names on the Facebook event page.

One of the organisers of the event, Sorcha Ní Bhéara, said “The Action on Emigration protest provides young people with the opportunity to call on the government to make youth employment a priority. Young people are emigrating in their thousands, and Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin believe that sustainable economic growth is not possible with our talented, eager and educated youth leaving for other shores. We are aware that the government can claim a decrease in welfare figures, but this will be due to unemployed people forced out of their home country to seek opportunities elsewhere, not because of economic progress. We are calling on everyone affected by emigration to join us and make our voices heard.”

The action will take place between 14:00 – 15:30 and it will be followed by a BBQ in 44 Parnell Square. We encourage all those who wish to tackle the scourge of emigration to come along to this event.

Ógra condemns Joan Burton's comments

Yesterday, an article in the Sunday Independent quoted Joan Burton, Minister for Social Protection in the 26 counties, claiming that young people on social welfare choose it as a “lifestyle choice”. She believes that “what we are getting at the moment is people who come into the system straight after school as a lifestyle choice.” The most pressing question about this statement is; what planet is the Labour minister living on? This country has now the most serious levels of unemployment in a generation. According to the Central Statistics Office the unemployment figures now stand at 14.2%, that is 446,800 people signing on the live register. If Minister Burton feels that there is an abundance of jobs for young people on social welfare, then perhaps she should be given the brief of the Department of Finance and let her get the 446,800 people back to work. In a time of severe economic difficulty social welfare offers a net of protection to those who cannot find full time employment. Those who come straight out of education receive a mere Є100 a week. Basic economic understanding will tell you that Є100 will almost certainly go back into the local economy, therefore keeping someone else in a job and off the live register. If young unemployed people are unable to receive some financial assistance to help them survive then they will have no choice but to leave the country and seek employment elsewhere. If they emigrate they will not be of any benefit to the Irish economy and the current government will only repeat the mistakes of previous governments and encourage a brain drain from this country.

There is very little “lifestyle” to be had on Є100. Minister Burton is looking at a social problem from the wrong end. Instead of asking why there is a higher percentage of people in certain areas who rely on social welfare, or why the poverty gap in growing in Ireland, the Minister has lashed out at young people claiming that they are lazy. Yet when questioned on the issue the Minister was unable to give a figure as to how many young people were abusing the system. It seems that the Labour Minister has inherited the social bigotry of other parties and is failing to provide a real alternative to young people, or simply offer then hope. Ógra condemns Joan Burton's comments and calls on her to do more to aid and assist the unemployed youth of this country.

Athlone Youth remember the Hunger-Strikers

‘The young men and women who undertook to go on Hunger Strike within both Armagh Jail and the H-Blocks in 1981 caused a series of events which ultimately became a watershed in the republican struggle. I firmly believe that this generation of young people is one that will bring about real change to society and culture across Ireland, but it is essential that young republicans are to the forefront in that process. Today’s young people are the next generation of Irish politicians and policy makers, therefore I urge you to ignite the debate among all young people about the kind of a republic you would like to see Ireland become’ said Sinn Féin MLA Seán Lynch as he addressed a large crowd of republicans, young and old, in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel last Wednesday for an event organised by Athlone Ógra Shinn Féin.

Significantly, the event, entitled ’30 Years On: Athlone Youth Remember the 1981 Hunger Strikers’, took place on the 30^th anniversary of the death of Hunger Striker and former general election candidate for Longford-Westmeath, Martin Hurson, in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh. Activities on the night included a book launch of the recently re-published Bobby Sands’ Diary, a talk on the topic of ‘Youth in Struggle’ given by Seán Lynch MLA for Fermanagh South Tyrone and a DVD showing of Blanketmen – a documentary by Belfast filmmaker Barry Curran which focuses on the 1976-81 H-Block no-wash protests that eventually led to the hunger strikes and is told on screen by a number of former republican prisoners.

‘It really is heartening to see so many young people from around the town turning up for tonight’s event’ said local Ógra Shinn Féin member David Mc Weeney afterwards. ‘It goes to show how much the 1981 Hunger Strike still resonates with people up and down the country who were not even around during the 1980’s. However, as Seán mentioned this evening, we must take strength from the courage and conviction shown by individuals like Martin Hurson to strive for real political change across today’s Ireland. We have had dreadful government mismanagement for too long on this island and it is up to the young people of this country to start deciding what we want for Ireland’s future. After only just 4 months in Government, Fine Gael and the Labour Party have hiked third-level education fees, cut vital services to Roscommon County Hospital and laid out plans to slash wage protections for the lowest paid in our society among a plethora of cuts and u-turns on election promises. That is certainly not the Ireland those 10 men died fighting for in the cells of Long Kesh.

Republicanism: A message on Bastille Day

Political engagement and the place of the ordinary citizen in politics has come to the fore of the Irish political debate in recent months. The economic meltdown and the inability of the average person to control the destiny of the country has caused some to take notice and reevaluate their connection with politics and the political process. This is quite apparent in the 26 counties where, after more than a decade of Fianna Fáil power, people realised that they had lost their connection with politics and the ability to shape their own collective future. During the Celtic Tiger years, we were fed the message that we were individuals and should only be concerned with individual interests. Following the collapse of the economy, people awoke to the sharp realisation that they were part of a wider society. Decisions were being made beyond their control, and many discovered that as long as they remained removed from political activism they had little direction over their own future.

However this awakening was not just contained to the 26 counties. Simultaneously there occurred democratic uprisings all across North Africa and the Middle East, now known as the Arab Spring. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets in countries such as Libya, Egypt and Bahrain. This tide of democratic uprising caught like wildfire as it as it shook the old political orders of the Arab world. While there may not be the same level of political protest in Ireland, there can be no doubt that those scenes of democratic, republican action has awoken a hibernated thought in the Irish people. The scenes of thousands of people demanding political change in Tahrir Square can only have given courage to people throughout the world.

In Ireland there has been a severe lack on engagement with the political system, especially in the 26 counties. During the boom years, the political culture encouraged people not to get involved in decision making, to look after themselves first and to focus on making money. This political culture trickled down into youth culture. There appeared to be very little engagement between young people and the political process. This can be exemplified with poor voting turnouts amongst young people, not just in general elections, but also in student elections on campuses. This disengagement allowed the elite to operate with almost immunity from the traditionally most vociferous of groups, the youth.

As a member of Ógra Shinn Féin you are one step ahead. There is little engagement by young people with the political system and even less become political activists. This is not to say that young people are not idealistic, progressive or passionate. It is rather that they do not see politics as relevant to them. As a member of Ógra you have clearly made the decision that you will make politics work for you. This is often not an easy battle. It can be tedious and disheartening. With so many young people feeling detached from politics it can often feel that you are speaking to a brick wall. However this is struggle that we will win.

Not only are we young political activists, we are also young republicans. It is sometimes a word that we take for granted. What do we mean when we say we are republicans? What role can republicanism play in a modern Ireland? As republicans we believe that the end of partition is the only means by which Ireland can move forward. While partition remains all other efforts are stunted. Yet surely republicanism means something beyond partition. Republicanism must be part of everyday life. It must be part of our interaction with others and our interaction with politics. It requires us to be active citizens. Not just to vote or be a member of a political party. It requires us to take an active role in our communities, whether that be community organisation, sports club or Students' Union. As republicans we should never accept things as they are, but always seek to question. As Bobby Sands said “Everyone, Republican or otherwise, has their own particular part to play.” Therefore, we have a duty to be active citizens, we must take hold of our own destiny. No one else will do it for us. We, as revolutionaries, must ensure that our revolution is constant. Democracy those not reach an end, but is constantly seeking to improve.

So on this Bastille Day, a day that celebrates the idea that ordinary people can have control over their own destinies, we should reaffirm our own republican principles. This is the time for republican politics. Let us storm our own Bastille and take charge of out own destinies. Let us spread the message of Liberty. Equality and Fraternity. Let all tyrants quake. While the politics of today may be dejection, let the politics of tomorrow be republican.

12th July. A Republican Tradition

There are heartwarming scenes all across the north of the country this evening. As a republican it joyful to know that the cause of liberty, equality and fraternity is alive and kicking in the north of the island. A sense of history and internationalism is also clearly evident from the glorious celebrations taking place. Street corners are illuminated with colour and there is a sense of excitement in the air. What else could it be but the red, white and blue to celebrate Bastille Day. That fateful day, from which sprung the cause of republicanism throughout the world, is being celebrated all across Ulster. So eager are they to celebrate the republican cause they march on the 12^th July, slightly earlier than the French. They cannot hold in their excitement as they march through the streets, holding aloft depictions of a king they too wish had gone to the guillotine. These ardent republicans will cry 'No Surrender' to emphasize their unflinching commitment to republicanism. Calling themselves the 'Orange Order' (after the fruit reportedly hated by Louis XVI), they are the most hardline of republicans. So as they march along the streets of Ireland we applaud their cries of Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité!

A President for All

The hype, gossip and rumour in Irish politics is now flowing from the race for Áras an Uachtaráin later this year. With several candidates already selected, and more seeking a nomination, the media and the wider political world is alive with talk of the upcoming election. However, most are missing the elephant in the room. Though the title is 'Uachtarán na hÉireann', a large chunk of the Irish population are unable to vote. Those living in the six counties are denied the right to play their part in choosing the President of Ireland. Though the President welcomes players from the 32 counties at the 6 nations championship and the All-Ireland final, a significant proportion of the country have no say in who that president is.

Ógra Shinn Féin have launched a campaign aimed at highlighting this lapse of democracy. The President for All campaign aims to have voting rights extended to citizens in the north. Ógra stand by JLC workers

Yesterdays ruling by the High Court will allow employers to avoid employment terms set out by the Joint Labour Committee (JLC). The action taken by several fast food companies will remove working conditions, such as increased pay on Sundays and Bank Holidays. The majority of those employed in areas affected by this ruling are lower waged workers, those on the bottom rung of the employment ladder. This action by the fast food companies does not just harm ordinary workers, it also has a negative effect on the economy. Nat O'Connor of the progressive economics think thank TASC wrote:

"Say one business cuts the wages of its staff - that business has saved money and, all things being equal, should become more profitable (although staff performance might also fall). However, one stores's employee is another store's customer. If the 200,000+ generally lower paid workers protected by the JLC system all suffer pay cuts, that is going to lower demand in the economy; i.e. they are all going to have less money to spend in the local economy. And people on low wages spend most or all of their money. (All of this is basic economics). http://bit.ly/mKzEhB "

Ógra Shinn Féin would like to reaffirm its position and stand beside the low paid in our country. The protection of wages is vital in the battle of protecting workers rights. If we aspire to any form of social improvement we must ensure that the lowest paid receive fair pay for the work that they do. Ógra Shinn Féin calls on the Government in the 26 counties to make sure that workers rights are protect and to prevent a race to the bottom in our economy. Ógra activist and part time worker Alan Conway announced “Ógra must help with the battle against the erosion of hard won workers rights. We call on Ógra members to assist in any strike action workers wish to carry out to protect their livelihoods. It is in the interest of low paid workers and young people that this is a battle we win.”

Poor Paul Williams

With the announcement that the News of the World is set to close this Sunday we can't help but feel sorry for 'journalist' Paul Williams. Known for his amazing and intricate pieces of fiction, Paul was seduced by the News of the World with a big, fat paycheck to fill their pages with his fanciful stories. This less than meager wage was also supplemented by work portraying Shell Oil as a brave warrior fighting heartless and cruel communities in the west of Ireland. Poor Paul will now surely be feeling the pinch after such a reputable newspaper has been shut down. We here at the Ógra blog would like to extended an invitation to poor old Paul to have a fiction section on the blog. The pay might not be great (or non existent) but we promise him artistic freedom. We also promise he can use all the sensationalist headlines he wants. Don't be a stranger Paul.

Roscommon Hospital: A fight for equality

The most isolated and vulnerable are at the coalface of the battle once again. This time it is a fight to be treated as equal citizens. While the elite of the state have signed its citizens into exploitation at hands of the EU and IMF, they are simultaneously pushing those on the verge of society closer and closer to the brink. This time the fight is for the retention of services in Roscommon hospital.

A constant stream for some of the media and organisations such as IBEC tell us that we must “get to grips with reality”. They attempt to convey to us that we are living in some form of 'social welfare bubble' and we can't understand the harsh realities of the modern, capitalist economy. The dramatic irony of such allusions would be comical if the situation were not so serious. The facts is that those at the top, those in elite positions, cannot understand what happens to ordinary people when you take away their most basic rights.

The people of Roscommon and the surrounding areas are at a disadvantage. While they are equal citizens, pay equal taxes, have an equal vote, they are not treated equally. Due to partition they are separated from their natural economic heartland, and therefore the area those not produce the wealth that the elite believe is needed for them to be equals. This is the harsh reality of modern Ireland, this is the harsh reality of modern capitalism.

All along the western seaboard there are people living at a disadvantage. Ireland's wealth seems to be contained to certain pockets and those outside must suffer the consequences. This is not just a rural phenomenon. Those living in poorer urban areas can also be disregarded by those making the decisions. For example health services in the northside of Cork city have been threatened. What is so incredulous about these decisions is that they are made with such ease and the life and death consequences can be so severe.

Yesterday well over a thousand people stood outside Leinster House with a simple request. They were not demanding a 'center of exclence', they were not demanding to be given treatment, they were simply asking to be treated as equal citizens. The people of Roscommon and surrounding areas asked that their A&E department should not close. Sinn Féin TD, Michael Colreavy, addressed the Minister for Health yesterday evening and told the Dáil that those standing outside Leinster House “are the eyes and ears of their community and they have come here to see how Sinn Féin debate to safgeguard our health services.”

This is a battle likely to continue up and down the country. It is vital that Ógra Shinn Féin stand beside their community and the most vulnerable in society. This is not just a battle for the retention of A&E services, it is a battle for what a future Ireland will be like.

Youth Against H-Block; Cork Event.

On the 13th of July at 8.00pm in An Spailpín Fánach, Cork Ógra Shinn Féin will host an evening of discussion around the hunger strikers of 1981 and other young prisoners in the H-Blocks and Armagh Jail at the time; as well as the role of young activists outside the prison who were to the fore in the Anti H-Block/Armagh campaign.

On display will be a Cork Anti H-Block exhibition documenting the campaign in Cork with a particular focus on the Cork North-Central constituency where Mairéad Farrell stood in the 1981 general election.

Discussion topics will include "A Background to the 1981 Hunger Strikes", "The Role of Young People in the H-Block Campaign" and "The Legacy of the Hunger Strikes", and as the event coincides with the 30th anniversary of the death of Volunteer Martin Hurson, a talk on the life and times of Martin will be presented by a member of the Martin Hurson Cumann (University College Cork).

On Tuesday evening last, Ógra Shinn Féin Athlone held a very successful planning meeting in order to formulate a youth strategy for the area over the coming months and cement plans for the upcoming Youth Hunger Strike event in the town.

The meeting was well attended and included activists from both Roscommon and Westmeath sides of the town including Sinn Féin Town Councillor and the candidate for Longford-Westmeath in the most recent General election, Paul Hogan. Plans were discussed for the summer and thereafter including reforming of the Athlone cumann to incorporate both electoral divisions and a strategic work-plan was discussed by the group which will help to guide activity into the future.

There were a range of ideas put forward at the meeting in relation to youth campaigning and we hope to transform the strategy into comprehensive and co-ordinated on the ground activism very soon. In the short term, Ógra Átha Luain are encouraging republicans from all across the midlands to attend their regional Hunger Strike commemorative event taking place on Wednesday 13^th July at 7.30pm in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone.

This event takes place on the 30^th anniversary of Martin Hurson’s death while on Hunger Strike in the H-Blocks. Martin stood in the 1981 General Election for Longford/Westmeath, polling over 10% of the vote and just missing out on taking a seat in that constituency; he remains to this day an inspiration to the people of Athlone and indeed to all young republicans.

There will be a specific focus on the topic of ‘youth in struggle’ for this event which will include a book launch of the recently published ‘Diary of Bobby Sands’, a DVD showing of ‘Blanketmen’ which gives an insight into the lives of republican prisoners around this time and a talk given by Seán Lynch, a former republican prisoner in Long Kesh and recently-elected MLA for Fermanagh/South Tyrone who was central to the anti-H Blocks campaign throughout the 1980's. The event will be chaired by Athlone Town Councillor Paul Hogan.

David McWeeney of Athlone Ógra Shinn Féin is encouraging people to attend this unique event making the point that ‘while the death of Martin Hurson and his fellow hunger-strikers wrought much grief and anguish for people across Ireland, its aftermath certainly brought new beginnings; the Hunger-Strike evoked emotions worldwide and a new emphasis was placed on the republican struggle. It is now, 30 years later, that we must reflect on what these people have achieved for Irish republicanism and acknowledge the enormous level of courage and bravery involved in undertaking the overwhelming task of a hunger-strike, not knowing whether they would live or die.

‘An interesting aspect of the republican movement is that it doesn’t matter how far you go back, youth have always been to the forefront in the struggle for Irish freedom, and the hunger strikers were no different - young men and women with sisters, brothers, mothers and fathers.

‘I think going forward it is vital that today’s generation of young republicans and, indeed, young people in general, have an understanding of the commitment and determination these people possessed, as well as the fact that they were young people themselves. This type of event is unique to the area and is a fantastic chance to meet new friends, discuss republicanism with other young people and learn something new in a relaxed atmosphere. Ógra have announced the first details of the National Hunger Strike Youth Weekend. This years weekend is to take place in South Armagh and will remember those who gave their lives for the Republican cause 30 years ago this summer.

The weekend will take place between the 12th and the 14th August. It is set to be a great weekend with a lively mixture of political debate, ceol agus craic, historical tours, and the National Hunger Strike Commemoration.

Encouraging Ógra activists to attend, National Organiser Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire said

1pm - Tour will finish at the Roddy McCorley club, where there'll be an opportunity to have a look around the grounds of the club including the Hunger Strike monument and Womens memorial garden. The fascinating Roddys musuem will also be available for viewing. Light refreshments will also be provided in the Roddys.

2:30pm - The day will be concluded with talks, debate and discussion with people who were young Republican activists at the time of the Hunger Strike. The event will be chaired by East Belfast Sinn Féin Councillor and youngest ever Mayor of Belfast Niall Ó Donnghaile.

Ógra Shinn Féin comment on Gaza flotilla attack

Ógra Shinn Féin has strongly condemned the sabotage of the MV Saorise, the Ireland based ship which joined the Gaza Freedom Flotilla.

The attack came as the Irish vessel was about to embark on its voyage to deliver aid to Gaza, which has been illegally blockaded by the Israeli state.

Ógra Shinn Féin's International Officer Daithi Byrne condemned the act of sabotage;

"The Irish aid vessel MV Saoirse was stationed in Turkish territory yesterday for refuelling when the ships crew and later engineers found that the ship had been severly sabotaged. One of the propeller shafts had a component missing from it, which was alleged to have come off perhaps from the use of plastic explosives. It would appear that one or more divers under the ship removed the component and deformed one of the propeller shafts. This would eventually have led to a 'camshaft effect' which would see the propeller shaft rip through the hull of the vessel, into the engine room. Anyone in that area of the boat would have been injured or killed and the boat would have sank - no doubt resulting in loss of life."

This is the second vessel to have been imobilised. Days ago, the exact same damage was caused to the Italian vessel. There is wide speculation that the damage was caused by the Israeli military. These attacks come after months of Israeli efforts to halt the flotilla, with pressure being mounted on governments to put a stop to the solidarity act. In May 2010, Israel exhibited its characteristical opposition to humanitarian efforts when its navy commandos absailed onto the deck of the Mavi Marmara and murdered nine Turkish activists.

Ógra Shinn Féin would like to wish the humanitarian aid activists the very best on their voyage, despite the Irish ship being unable to take part. In particullar, we would like to wish Derry Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry MacLochlainn all the best as well as Charlie Mcmenamin, John Mallon and Phil McCullough who were unable to find alternative space on the flotilla.

Last month saw the passing of a music legend and a true revolutionary. Gil Scott Heron was the son of a Jamaican immigrant to the United States, Gil Heron, who became the first ethnic player for Celtic F.C. Gil Scott Heron held massive influence over African American music, mixing the cause of social liberation with new developments in music and sound. He championed causes from the anti-war movement, anti-nuclear arms, anti-apartheid and black liberation. His commitment to the improvement of the lives of the people in his community made him an inspiration to many musicians and activists that followed in his path. An accomplished author, his belief in the cause of the downtrodden shone through in his literary work. Despite chronic illness in his later years he continued to perform and record with such artists as Kanye West. He will be remembered as a champion of oppressed people throughout the world.

Ógra Tour Armagh Gaol

Armagh jail is a building steeped in republican history. It is the place where republican, female prisoners engaged in the dirty protest demanding their rightful status as ‘political prisoners’ and also where the 1980 hunger strike took place. Currently, it sits in quite a derelict state; many ceilings have collapsed, interior walls crumbled, and only remain standing thanks to various well positioned scaffolding. However, upon entry to the gaol, the eerie chill can still be felt creeping down the narrow, dark, damp and dank corridor. Controversially, this building, which many republican female P.O.W’s called home, will soon be transformed into a five star hotel and restaurant.

On Saturday the 18th of June, the Coney Kilpatrick OSF Cumann organised a tour of the infamous jail as part of a series of planned political tours and trips.

Activists present were lucky enough to have not one, but two guides for the event, a local council representative with extensive knowledge of the early history surrounding the jail and an ex-P.O.W who was incarcerated during the late seventies early eighties, Ann Marie Quinn.

Speaking following the tour, Ógra activist, Álanna Campbell said;

Overall the tour was a very successful event. I feel that the personal insight and memories given by Ann Marie Quinn on her time spent as a political prisoner in Armagh Jail added a special element to the day, and was greatly valued by myself, and the Ógra activists in attendance.

Knowing that many ex-P.O.Ws entered jail at such young ages and spent their youth behind bars, puts things in perspective for young activists like myself. While we lend whatever time and effort we can to the struggle, we do so in a completely different environment; incarceration is merely a concept which due to both male and female P.O.W’s and their fellow volunteers will never become a reality to us.

Over the next few months the east Tyrone cumann will be organising various political tours of significant republican places and everyone is welcome to participate.

Republicans to commemorate Martin Hurson’s 30th Anniversary

Republicans from Tyrone and neighbouring counties are expected to converge in Galbally on Wednesday 13th July to mark the 30th anniversary of the death on hunger strike of Martin Hurson.
His sacrifice and that of his 9 comrades is also commemorated on the National Hunger Strike exhibition which will be on display in Galbally Community Centre on 13th July from 12pm until 9pm.

The 30th anniversary commemoration is being organised by the Fergal O Hanlon/Martin Hurson Sinn Féin Cumann, with the support of the Tyrone SF Commemoration Committee.

Speaking at the launch of the events, the chair of Sinn Féin in Galbally and Cappagh, Paul Kelly said:

‘The 13th of July is Tyrone Volunteers day, when we commemorate all of the people from this county who have given their lives in the struggle for Irish freedom. It has added significance this year, because it falls on the 30th anniversary of Martin Hurson’s death.

‘The people of this area are immensely proud of the bravery and courage of our neighbour, Martin Hurson. During the hunger strike, this area, like many others parts of the country, was a hive of activity with nightly protests and vigils in support of the hunger strikers.

‘Local people who were around that time, will remember the nightly rosary at Beechline, the hunger strike marches and torchlight processions, not only in Galbally, but in other areas, such as Pomeroy, Dungannon, Donaghmore and Carrickmore.

‘Martin’s courage and selflessness inspired many others to get involved in the struggle, and many from this area took up arms and got involved politically in pursuit of freedom and Irish re-unification.

Unfortunately, in Galbally/Cappagh and in other Republican communities, many young men and women gave their lives and it is imperative that we commemorate their bravery and show our support for their families.

Also speaking at the launch, Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Gillespie said ‘Reflecting back on 1981, like most people, I am full of emotion. I remember voting for Bobby Sands and the surge of elation that was experienced when he was elected. This brought hope that the situation in Long Kesh could be resolved and the lad’s lives could be saved.

‘I vividly remember the frustration when Martin narrowly missed out on taking a seat in the Longford/Westmeath constituency. Above all, I recall a sense of deep sadness, mixed with pride as the 10 men bravely gave their lives in defiance at the Brits attempts to label them as criminals.

Cllr Gillespie concluded ‘Whilst extremely proud, we are ever conscious of the hurt experienced by the Hurson family and all families who lost loved ones in the struggle. We will always stand in solidarity with the families of our patriot dead as we prepare to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1981 hunger strike’.

The parade leaves Galbally Community Centre at 6pm following the annual Martin Hurson football tournament (women’s final 2pm; men’s final 4pm) and proceeds to the Republican monument in Cappagh where the main speaker is Francie Molloy MLA.

Ógra took part in yesterdays Gay Pride march in Dublin. It was estimated that over 25,000 people attended the march. Ógra members carried a banner declaring 'Gay Rights are Human Rights'. Gay Pride celebrates many aspects of LGBTQ culture, from the jovial to the political. Ógra focused on the discrimination that gay people suffer under the Irish legal system where they are not treated as equal citizens.

The organisers of Dublin Pride 2011, along with the LGBT Noise and Marriage Equality are calling on all supporters of equality and the gay rights agenda to mobilise and attend. Support for this year's march is critical, as there is finally an equality agenda on the Programme for Government in Leinster House. Marriage Equality are calling on all supporters to come and show their support, and to send a message to this coalition that the issue of equality and gay rights will NOT be swept under the rug of increased bailouts and water charges. Paul Maskey won over 70% of the vote, retaining the seat for Sinn Féin. A revolutionary tradition

This summer hundreds of thousands of people across the island of Ireland will participate in the celebration of cultural independence. This is a movement that many people attend and a celebration that is beamed into many more houses through television, internet and radio. Many people are already members of this revolutionary organisation but don't even know it. This organisation is none other than the Gaelic Athletic Association.

From its early foundations the GAA was at the forefront of the independence movement. It has pushed, not just for political independence, but also for cultural independence. It has championed issues such as the Irish language. It refused to let soldiers of occupying forces to become members. It ignored partition, remaining a thirty two county organisation. It has also been very progressive on women in sport, something that is often lacking in other sports. In recent years, it has been very open when GAA players have come out as gay.

The GAA, from the outset, had significant ties with the republican cause. Bloody Sunday of 1920 in Croke Park is just an early example of the links between the GAA and the republican movement. British forces knew that an attack on the GAA would be an attack on the struggle for Irish freedom. Michael Hogan, who was playing for Tipperary on that day, was also an active IRA volunteer. John Joe Sheehy managed to play for Kerry in Croke Park while still being on the run from Free State Forces. Aidan McAnespie, an enthusiastic young GAA member, was murdered by British forces on his way to a match in 1988. Crossmaglen Rangers GAA club received harassment from a British military base that occupied part of their playing grounds for many years. The community had the local GAA club as a rallying point for opposition to this oppression.

If you throw on a jersey this summer, or travel to a match, or just enjoy the sport from the comfort of your own home remember the proud tradition that you follow. Whatever county you support, remember that you are part of a revolutionary movement.

Cuban veteran visits UCC

'What does revolution mean to the youth of today?' This was the theme of the event which saw a delegation of Cubans visit the campus of University College Cork recently to mark the 50^th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs. Amongst the delegation was veteran revolutionary Victor Dreke Cruz. Victor Dreke had served closely with Che Guevara during the Cuban Revolution. He was also instrumental in organising students to fight with the revolutionaries.

A good humored and jovial Victor Dreke told of his time in the revolution and a diligent audience listen to him recount his tales of the revolution. Many questions were also asked from interested participants ranging from topics such as Cuba's efforts to help liberate African nations to the type of war planes used in the Bay of Pigs invasion. The audience was made up of the members of the Martin Hurson Cumann based in UCC. There was also a healthy attendance from the wider student populace who came along to hear the veteran revolutionary.

Following the talk the delegation were invited outside to lay a wreath at the republican plot in UCC. The plots holds the remains of volunteers who were executed by British forces in what was the Cork Gaol, where part of the college now stands. Victor Dreke was then presented with a portrait of the Hunger Strikers by the Martin Hurson Cumann.

Within the next month, 2 major events will take place on the theme of Irish reunification in Dublin and Cork. The conferences, entitled 'Towards a New Republic – I dtreo Phoblacht Nua', aim at attracting a broad section of society to discussing this crucial topic in a full and comprehensive manner.

Ógra Shinn Féin believe it is of utmost important that young people have an input into this crucial debate and sowe are encouraging all young people, republican or otherwise, to come along and contribute in a meaningful and constructive way to the theme as outlined above.

The first conference takes place on Saturday June 18th in the Rotunda Pillar Room Complex, Parnell Square, Dublin 1 - beginning at 10am.

The second will happen a week later on Saturday June 25th in City Council Concert Hall, Cork - beginning at 7.30pm.

Speakers addressing the issue of 'Building the All-Ireland Economy' in Dublin will include Dr John Bradley (former research professor at the ERSI and adviser to the Europen Commission and World Bank), Dr Padraic White (former head of IDA and chairperson of the Employers' Service Board, West Belfast and Greater Shankill), Pearse Doherty TD (Sinn Fein spokesperson on finance) and Michael Darcy (Economic and Business consultant). Other subjects for discussion include ‘Equality and Children’ and ‘Catholic Protestant and Dissenter’. Among the speakers for these sessions are Dave Adams (former member of UDA), Mary Lou McDonald TD, and Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD.

IRA Volunteer Martin 'Doco' Doherty commemoration

A commemoration for IRA Volunteer Martin 'Doco' Doherty took place on Saturday the 21st May, 17 years to the day when Dublin Brigade's Martin Doherty was gunned down by a British-sponsored loyalist death squad while heroically attempting to prevent a massacre in Widow Scallans pub in 1994.

A large crowd gathered in Finglas village for the commemoration parade to the grave of Martin at Glasnevin Cemetery. Those in attendance included many Comrades, friends and relatives of Doco, as well as many of those in the Widow Scallans on the night who owe their lives to Doco.

Ann O'Sullivan laid the wreath and newly elected Sinn Féin TD Sean Crowe paid tribute to Martin Doherty who was not only dedicated to Ireland’s reunification but to his friends, family and comrades.

Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Saoirse Ní Chonaraín said a few words and read the poem Stars of Freedom by Bobby Sands to pay tribute to Dublin's bravest, Volunteer Martin Doherty;

"Doco would have been proud to see his son follow in his footsteps as a republican activist. Nineteen year-old Mick Farrell Doherty is heavily involved in Dublin Ógra and a member of the Ógra Shinn Féin National Executive and strives for the same objective as his father; a thirty-two county democratic socialist republic."

Mick Farrell Doherty thanked those who attended;

"I would like to thank all those who attended and the local Sinn Féin Cumann for organising the commemoration. Its just not good enough to commemorate my father’s life for one day of the year, all of us republicans must work with Sinn Féin and Ógra Shinn Féin, and help in achieving the republican goal until it is won, then and only then will we have really honoured Doco."

Pearse Doherty TD addresses Tyrone County Easter Commemoration in Carrickmore

A large crowd of Tyrone republicans descended on Carrickmore on Easter Sunday to mark the 95th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising. The County commemoration was the culmination of over 40 local graveside and wreath laying ceremonies throughout the O’Neill County.

Proceedings got under way with a re-enactment of the 1916 Easter Rising, choreographed by Gerry Cunningham and led by young republicans from Ógra Shinn Féin. The street theatre traced the key moments of the Rising with the Patrician Hall and its Pillars providing a very appropriate backdrop. The sound effects, and the authentic uniforms immersed the crowd in the action and the scene with the execution of the 7 signatories of the Proclamation was extremely emotive.

Following the re-enactment, the crowds assembled to start on the annual march around Carrickmore, and then to the Garden of Remembrance.

The march was led by a republican colour party which responded to commands in Irish.
There was a colourful display of Sinn Féin cumann banners at the march, with a large presence of young people in attendance with the Martin Hurson Memorial Band and the Coatbridge Republican Flute Band playing throughout.

When the march reached the Garden of Remembrance, Sinn Féin Commemoration Committee Chairperson Councillor Sean Begley chaired proceedings.

Pádraig Quinn from Derrytresk read aloud the 1916 Proclamation, and Kerry McColgan from Omagh read the Tyrone Brigade Roll of Honour. This was accompanied by a lament played on the fiddle by Alanna Campbell.

Marie Claire Devlin from Pomeroy delivered the Ógra Shinn Féin statement.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Republican Movement, the Old IRA, Sinn Féin, in memory of the Hunger Strikers, and by Ógra Shinn Féin.

The main speaker on the day was newly elected TD for Donegal South West, Pearse Doherty whose speech was followed by a very powerful and evocative rendition of Amhrán Na bhFiann sang by Niamh McElduff from Carrickmore.

Delivering the main oration, Pearse Doherty TD said,

"It is a privilege and honour to be standing here before you today in Carrickmore to pay tribute to Ireland's republican dead on the 95th Anniversary of the Easter Rising. As we honour the men and women of 1916, let us also remember all those republicans who gave their lives for Irish Freedom.

Tyrone was and is to the fore in the struggle for Irish freedom, you only have to look at the huge sacrifice borne in the most recent phase of the conflict with 57 IRA volunteers and 3 Sinn Féin activists on the Tyrone Brigade Roll of Honour.

Let us also remember here today all the Republicans in Tyrone who have dedicated their lives to the cause of a united Ireland, to the achievement of freedom, justice and peace, who have passed away since last Easter.

The principles set out in the Proclamation have yet to be put fully into effect on this island.

At the core of it, are Irish independence, sovereignty and equality. It is up to us to interpret these principles for our time, and to work together to achieve the type of free, just and equal Ireland envisaged by the men and women of 1916.

In 1916 we saw the coming together of republicans; nationalists, Irish Language activists, trade unionists and the women's movement in the cause of Irish Unity.

Today we need to build similar alliances not just to make Irish unity a reality but to ensure that it is an Ireland based on equality and justice. There has never been such a need for republican politics. The big questions of sovereignty, of people's rights, of citizenship are more relevant today than they have been for many years.

In these difficult times the absolute logic of political and economic reunification has never been easier to understand. The achievement of a United Ireland is within our reach. The peace process and the political developments which have grown from it have ensured huge change - Irish Language rights have been advanced, society demilitarised, second class citizenship has gone, and republicans are in the lead of a power sharing government.

But that is only part of the journey - we need to build support for Irish Unity. We need to engage with unionists about the future. We need to use our increased electoral strength to put pressure on the Irish government to begin preparations for re-unification. One very simple thing they could do immediately is to ensure that people in the 6 counties have a vote in the Presidential elections, which will take place later this year.

It is now less than a decade to the 100th anniversary of 1916 and we are now closer to bringing about a united Ireland.

But none of this will happen by chance. We need to organise, build support for Irish unity; expand the all-Ireland institutions, and force the Irish government to begin practical preparations for unity.

Sinn Fein is the only party with a strategy for the achievement of Irish Unity. In Tyrone Sinn Féin are leading the way with 3 MPs, 7 MLAs and 30 Councillors. We are using that mandate to create necessary change in communities and lead the demand for a united Ireland.

Our priority must be to further advance the republican objective of a united, independent Ireland. To keep making steady progress, and not to be deflected.
Sinn Fein's ability to negotiate successfully is ultimately dependent on the political strength of republicanism.

A few weeks ago Sinn Fein's newly elected TD's joined with our MLA's and MP's in Belfast. This was a powerful symbol of an All Ireland political project in action. This was real leadership across Ireland.

Although more still needs to be done, we need to build the party in every parish across Ireland. I call on everyone here to come forward and join Sinn Fein - people who were involved in the past, those who have helped out in election time, ex POWs, republican families, young and old - we need everyone to become involved.

This year will have an Assembly Election and local Council Election.

The elections on May 5th will be very emotive and significant because they fall on the 30th Anniversary of the death of IRA Vol. Bobby Sands.

We need to build on the momentum of our success in the 26 counties. That means an All Ireland effort. It means activists from every county in Ireland playing their own part in this campaign. It means continuing the process of change. The future lies in Irish unity and national equality.

We owe it to the Volunteers and to all those who have died throughout our struggle to reassert our efforts to see our struggle for independence through to an end.

While commemorations are important it is not enough for us to come here every Easter, the only true commemoration of our republican dead is to finish the struggle for which they died for. We must rise to the challenge and to go from here and make our fallen comrades proud as they have made us."

Dublin Ógra lead the way in Easter 1916 Commemorations

Over the last number of Days, Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin activists played a major part in organising the Easter Commemorations all over the county.

Dublin Ógra activists were central to the colour party, the flute band, stewarding, musicians, speakers and in selling booklets and collecting money.

Spokesperson for Dublin ÓSF Saoirse Ní Chonaraín, deliviered the following speech to an applauding crowd;

"Ógra would like to commend those who have turned out today to remember the patriots of Easter week. We are not just here to remember, but to re- dedicate ourselves to the cause for which these brave men and women sacrificed so much for, a 32 County Socialist Republic.

It is the duty of Dublin Ógra and all of us present to actively campaign for republican goals. We must be to the fore in campaigning to protect the rights of our people and to be actively involved in undermining the consensus of the right, keeping in mind our ultimate objective. Like the leaders of 1916, we reject not just British rule in Ireland but the capitalist system as represented by today’s government of Fine Gael and regrettably Labour.

We totally reject the use of the nation's wealth to pay of the private banking debts and prop up European capitalism while the people of Ireland endure cut after cut.

We completely oppose the state visit of the queen of England planned for next month. Not simply in opposition to her unapologetic stance on Britain’s bloody history in Ireland and throughout the world, but also, the obscenity represented by the waste of millions of euro on her visit, while countless people go without jobs, lose their homes and are forced to go without essential services in this city everyday. This represents everything we are against.

Over 800 years, movements of their time campaigned in their own way trying to achieve the goal of Irish freedom. We will be part of that campaign and we believe that we will be part of a generation of people that will win Irish freedom.

This year we also remember the 30th anniversary of the 1981 hunger strikers. We must think of these ten brave men as an inspiration. As in the words of Bobby Sands;

"They have nothing in their whole imperial arsenal that can break the spirit of one Irishman who does not want to be broken."

This is what separates us from those who seek personal gain. We will never forget the sacrifices made by those gone before us, and can not let them be in vain.

We stand together today closer to the achievement of our aims than any generation in almost a century. We must take this opportunity and allow our page to be written in history, as a time when we lived out our patriots dreams and became patriots ourselves. The struggle continues. Beir bua."

British Queen not welcome!

Listening to people like Irish Hotels Federation’s Chief Tim Fenn and Tourism Ireland CEO Niall Gibbons you would almost think that the British Queen’s visit was all we needed to get the country back on it’s feet. IMF/ECB bailout? I don’t think so, bring old Liz over, according to many of the leading “experts” the tourism sector will boom, and sure what else could you want?

I don’t think that I nor the speakers themselves have the patience or expertise to try and tease out the reality from these golden nuggets of speculation however the fact of the matter is the only boost to the Irish economy we are likely to see will be a one day spending spree on lollypops and tiny Union Jacks. I’m sure the country will prosper after such an anti-Paddy’s day. Bearing in mind of course that our taxes are likely to pay for the security of such a high and mighty visitor, one is forced to ask during a time of such economic hardship can it really be justified? I don’t know about you but I don’t want to see my taxes (yes I have paid taxes) pumped into high powered rifles designed to prevent Elizabeth’s jewel encrusted Crown from being damaged by some unruly protestor.

Denounce me as a political zealot if you will, but here are a few of the reasons why I am totally opposed to the Visit of her majesty the Queen. The British Queen is the head of the British armed forces. I hear people constantly question the limits of her power in relation to this debate. To clear things up, while she is not commanding ground forces in Iraq, she is the sole person who can declare war and conclude wars on other countries. At present, the British armed forces act as an occupying force in Iraq. The conflict thus far has claimed an estimated 122,483 civilian deaths. In Afghanistan where the queen’s forces are also present, 8131 Afghan civilians have been killed or injured in the past 2 years alone with casualties adding up even as I write this. Bear in mind that the original invasion took place in 2001, that is a quite a damning number of civilian deaths in just 2 years. I’m not sure about you but I’m not a huge fan of either conflict and I certainly won’t be there to shower the head of said armed forces with red, white and blue confetti.

The programme for our unelected visitor recently published by both Buckingham palace and Áras an Uachtaráin shamefully includes a visit not only to Croke Park, but the Garden of Remembrance. To add insult to injury her trip to Dublin occurs on the anniversary of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings. Aside from being downright bizarre it seems simply to be an attempt by southern politicians to bend over backwards in order to show how “pc” they can be while totally dispelling memory of our recent history. How will our imperialist visitor conclude her visit, with a stroll through the Bogside, or perhaps afternoon tea in Ballymurphy?

It ceaselessly amazes me that once the visit is mentioned, people go on the defensive, the Good Friday agreement, a sign of our political maturity, great for the country are terms bandied about from all sides. I however fail to see the merit in celebrating a visit by the Chief of the British armed forces when said forces happen to be occupying 6 of the 32 counties of our country. With the ink on the Saville report not even dry and the Ballymurphy massacre not even given mention, I find it a tad stinging that my Government and President would welcome a woman with honorary title in the Paratrooper Regiment responsible for the acts, to the south of our country with such open arms. The invitation is immature. The wounds from the Irish conflict are far too fresh. And while the North remains under British control I couldn’t see myself supporting such a move.

Kurdish delegation visit Ireland

Ógra Shinn Féin played host to a delegation from the Association of Students from Kurdistan, Yekitiya Xwendekarên Kurdistan (YXK).

The delegation follows Navan's Cllr. Joe Reilly's visit to Istanbul last December where he participated in a conference on the Kurdish issue and the struggle for self-determination.

The delegation who are on a ten day trip around Ireland, were brought to significant historical sites all over the country. The students spent time in Dublin, Meath, Tyrone, Derry, Belfast and Cork.

The YXK was founded in Germany in 1991, and is an umbrella association of organisations and student groups from Kurdistan. In view of the conflict which has claimed 45,000 lives since 1984 between the Turkish military and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), many Kurdish students felt the need to organize and stand up for the right ofself-determination for the Kurdish people.

International officer for Ógra Shinn Féin Dáithí Byrne, said; "We are delighted to have hosted the first Kurdish youth political delegation and we thought it important for them to visit to see sites which are hugely significant on the timeline of Irish history. We support the Kurdish struggle for self-determination, and extend our solidarity to them. We have many relationships with international organisations such as those in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Corsica. Our ties with the Kurdish students help us learn from other struggles and share our experience of the peace process here in Ireland."

The chairperson of Ógra Shinn Féin in South Down, Brendan McGuinness, has called on young people to make their vote count in the upcoming Assembly and council elections.

Mr McGuinness said,

"As a young person I understand the questions that my peers will consider when deciding which party to vote for on May 5th. Issues such as tuition fees, youth provision, and jobs for the future are all high on the agenda.

"Sinn Féin have well thought out policies on all of these matters. When Sinn Fein proposed the abolition of student fees the SDLP opposed us in the assembly. Sinn Féin believe that education is a right, not a privilege, and we will continue to fight for this principle.

Clady/Ballymacnab (Armagh) Hungerstrike Weekend Launched

The Ballymacnab/Clady 81 committee recently launched a weekend of events to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1981 hunger strike which will take place in the Ballymacnab and Clady area on Saturday 16th April and Sunday 17th April including a mass, function, exhibition and panel discussion. Conor Murphy MP joined a number of local republican activists, Sinn Féin representatives and former POWs in Armagh to formally unveil details of the event. Speaking at the launch, local Sinn Féin representative Liam Lappin said, “The 1981 hunger strike was a defining point in our history when ten very brave and courageous men defied British attempts to criminalise the republican struggle in Ireland. The hunger strikers have become iconic figures for freedom loving people across the world, and of course here in Ireland we regard them as heros.”

Also endorsing the weekend of events and encouraging people to show their support, Cathal Boylan MLA said, “I would encourage people, especially our youth to come and participate in this commemorative weekend. The year 1981 became a turning point in our liberation struggle and its legacy remains on a similar scale as 1916. The weekend will include the national hunger strike exhibition as well as a panel discussion with former blanketmen and protesting prisoners. The clar for the weekend is as follows:

Óglach Seamus McElwain 25th Anniversary Commemoration

Republicans will gather next week on Holy Saturday (23rd April) to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of IRA Volunteer Seamus McElwain who was killed in an undercover ambush by the British SAS.

Sean Lynch was with Seamus when they were attacked, he was seriously injured in the ambush.

There will be a commemoration in Knockatallon, County Monaghan at 6.30pm, assembling at the monument dedicated to Seamus. Gerry Kelly is the main speaker and there will be a booklaunch and an exhibition in the Sliabh Beagh Hotel after. The events will conclude with an Irish night with music by Paddywagon.

Encouraging people to come along to the commemoration, Seamus's good friend and comrade Sean Lynch said,

"I am extremely proud to call myself a close friend and comrade of Seamus. I would encourage everyone to join with us in remembering a revolutionary freedom fighter. Seamus McElwain was a dauntless and brave IRA volunteer who struck fear into the British War Machine in the 6 Counties and even though he was momentarily captured, he was an integral part of the 1983 Great Escape when he alongside 37 IRA political prisoners escaped from Long Kesh."

"Gerry Adams TD spoke passionately about Seamus at his funeral calling him 'a brave intelligent soldier, a young man who gave up his youth to fight for the freedom of his country, an Irish freedom fighter murdered by British terrorists.’”

"Seamus gave his all to bring about necessary change and freedom to our country. He dedicated his whole life and gave the ultimate sacrifice so that young people of the future could live in a free and equal Ireland. Seamus was a revolutionary through and through, he was inherently political and knew that our struggle would lead us on a path of politics, that armed struggle could only take us so far. Infact he stood himself in the 1982 general election in Cavan Monaghan receiving almost 4000 votes."

Fermanagh South Tyrone Sinn Féin Election Broadcast

Ógra Shinn Féin have produced an election broadcast for Fermanagh South Tyrone Sinn Féin. The republican youth movement have uploaded the broadcast onto YouTube and will be promoting through the various social networks like Facebook and Twitter from now until May 5th.

The video features footage from last year’s election, and emphasises the point that every single vote counts, it also includes footage of the current election campaign and also the hugely significant election of Bobby Sands as MP over 30 years ago. Among those interviewed are the 3 Sinn Féin Assembly Candidates, Michelle Gildernew MP, Phil Flanagan and Sean Lynch.

Donegal T.D to address Tyrone County Easter commemoration

The newly elected T.D. for South west Donegal, Pearse Doherty will be the main speaker at this year’s Tyrone County commemoration in Carrickmore on Easter Sunday. The county commemoration, along with over 40 local mobilisations are being organised by the Tyrone SF Commemoration committee. This includes a County commemoration in Coalisland on Easter Saturday (3pm) which will be addressed by former hunger striker, Pat Sheehan MLA. Martin Mc Guinness MP will deliver the oration at Ardboe on Easter Monday.

Speaking at the launch of the commemorative programme of events in the Garden of Remembrance last Friday evening, the chair of the organising committee, Sean Begley said:

‘This year marks the 95th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising. Nationally and internationally thousands of Republicans will mobilise to remember this defining moment in Irish history. ‘In this part of Ireland, the Tyrone Sinn Féin Commemoration Committee has organised over forty mobilisations throughout the county to mark this anniversary and to commemorate all Republicans who have played their part in every generation in the struggle for Irish freedom. Also speaking at the launch, were the Sinn Féin chairs of Tyrone’s 4 councils – Michelle O Neill, John Mc Namee, Micheala Boyle and Declan Mc Aleer. Cllr O Neill said ‘This is a hugely important and symbolic year for Republicans. Not only are we commemorating the 95th anniversary of the Rising, we are also remembering the 30th anniversary of the 1981 hunger strike when 10 Republican volunteers laid down their lives in defiance of Britain’s attempt to label them as criminals. ‘It is therefore fitting that the National Hunger Strike exhibition will be on display in the Cornmill, Coalisland on Good Friday and Easter Saturday and in the Patrician on Easter Sunday following the county parade in Carrickmore.

‘The commemoration committee have put together a wide range of events this Easter to celebrate and commemorate the sacrifice of those who have laid down their lives. In addition to the county and local commemorations, we also have exhibitions and street theatre. ‘The story of the hunger strike will be told through the National exhibition which will be on display in Coalisland and Carrickmore over Easter weekend. In addition to this, and due to unprecedented popular demand, we have decided to organise the street theatre again this year.

‘The street theatre will re enact the scene which unfolded at the GPO on Easter Monday 1916. When we did this last year, the feedback was hugely positive, so we have decided to re enact this particular scene this year. The play is quite emotive, but also a very effective way for people of all ages to learn at firsthand what occurred at the GPO in 1916, and its aftermath. The re enactment will commence at 2.45pm.

The chair of Strabane District Council, Michaela Boyle said ‘I am asking that you pay tribute to Irelands patriot dead by making a special effort to attend the county commemorations and as many local commemorations as possible. ‘In addition to attending the various events planned, I am calling on nationally minded people to proudly wear the Easter lily. Sinn Féin carried out a successful youth canvass in Enniskillen on Saturday 9th April. It was organised to mark the 30th Anniversary of the election of Hunger Striker Bobby Sands as MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone. The youth canvass was led by the party's youth wing Ógra Shinn Féin, and included Ciarán May who at 20 is the youngest Council Candidate and Phil Flanagan who at 26 is the youngest Assembly candidate. The canvass focussed on youth issues particularly unemployment and job creation, emigration, education, suicide prevention, drug and alcohol awareness and youth and sporting facilities. The republican youth movement say they received a brilliant response on the doors. A fresh and upbeat atmosphere filled Donagh's Millenium Centre on Saturday as Pearse Doherty TD and Seanad Candidate Kathryn Reilly were guest speakers at a Sinn Féin Youth Talk. The youngest Assembly candidate in Fermanagh South Tyrone Phil Flanagan chaired the event and the general feel was re-enforced by a large presence of young people. They were joined by the other two Sinn Féin Assembly Candidates Michelle Gildernew MP and Sean Lynch.

Kathryn Reilly and Pearse Doherty both spoke about the huge issues facing Irish youth today. They re-iterated that Sinn Féin were working and campaigning across Ireland to combat youth unemployment, campaigning for free education, adequate health, proper housing, provide decent youth and sporting facilities and working to reverse the plight of youth emigration. The Sinn Féin young spokesperson's highlighted that the recent success of Sinn Féin in the South, and the anticipated success in the upcoming Assembly and Council Elections will strengthen Sinn Féin's hand to continue to create the changes in society necessary to bring about freedom and equality.

Ógra Shinn Féin have organised a youth canvass in Enniskillen for Saturday 9th April from 1 – 5pm on the 30th Anniversary of Bobby Sand’s Election as MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone.

The youth wing of Sinn Féin will be undertaking the canvass to assist in getting the youth vote out to win a historic three Assembly Seats for the party and increase their number of Councillors.

Donegal Launch New Ógra Cumann

Ógra Shinn Féin continues to grow with yet another cumann established within Cuige Uladh. The North West Donegal cumann was officially launched on Saturday the 3rd of March at the Caoimhín Mac Brádaigh commemoration.

Caoimhín was killed along with two other nationalists by a loyalist attacker at Milltown Cemetery on the 16th March 1988. This atrocious attack happened while family and mourners attended the funeral of the Gibaraltar three when a loyalist gunman shot indiscriminately into the crowd.

Ógra played a leading role in the commemoration, at which they where commended by poll topping TD Pearce Doherty.

Speaking on the establishment of the new cumann, Donegal spokesperson Fintan Butler said:

“There has never been a more exciting time to be involved in Sinn Fein. Throughout the last number of weeks we have presented a clear, coherent and grounded alternative to the failings of the Fianna Fail/ Green government and because of this we were able to come away with 14 TDs in the general election. The high from this victory defiantly contributed to the formation of the cumann, with 10s of young people seeking to join Sinn Féin.

Ógra will play a key role in the Donegal area in the time ahead as Sinn Féin continues to be the only real opposition to the Fine Gail Labour collation”.

Two of Sinn Féin's youngest stars Pearse Doherty TD for Donegal South West, and Seanad Candidate Kathryn Reilly will be the main speakers at a Sinn Féin Youth Engagement in Donagh Hall on Saturday 2nd April at 2pm.

The public talk will focus on the 1981 Hunger Strike, and how events 30 years ago have shaped modern Ireland. There will also be a focus on issues of today, particularly around jobs, and education and there will be an opportunity for young people to raise any burning issues that are impacting on their lives.

The Hunger Strikers were all young men; Patsy O'Hara was only 23 and the oldest Hunger Striker was Joe McDonnell only 29. It is important for young people today to learn and understand the circumstances and indeed the motivations which led to young people only 30 years ago willing to die on Hunger Strike. The youth engagement promises to be extremely interesting, educational and informative, an event not to be missed."

RIR Homecoming Divisive, Insensitive and Waste of Money - May

The recent announcement that there is to be an RIR Homecoming in Enniskillen on the 20th May has angered Ógra Shinn Féin.

Ciarán May spokesperson for the republican youth movement, who is also a Sinn Féin representative for Enniskillen has criticised the event as a 'coat trailing triumphalist parade that will be divisive, insensitive in the extreme and a waste of money.'

Mr May said,
"The proposed RIR homecoming is an absolute disgrace, and will do nothing but ferment division in Enniskillen. This coat trailing exercise and triumphalist parade will be divisive, insensitive in the extreme and a waste of money. Ógra Shinn Féin has actively and continues to oppose the bloody occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq, and for these people to be given heroes return from Afghanistan following their oil driven murderous exploits beggar's belief. Not to mention the RIR/UDR's record in Ireland and Fermanagh, were they were up to their necks in collusion and state murder."

"At a time of economic recession, it is also appalling that money would be wasted on such an offensive thing. Ógra Shinn Féin is opposed to this event and calls for it to be cancelled."

The 1981 Hunger Strike Key Focus of ‘The People’s Forum’

Tyrone Republican Ex Prisoner group Éirí na Gréine are hosting a forum including public talks and discussion looking at the 1981 Hunger Strike.

As well as recalling events from 30 years ago, ‘The People’s Forum’ will also look at the legacy of the Hunger Strike, the future and the particular role that young people will play in shaping a new society. The event is organised through the Éirí na Gréine ‘Looking Back to Move Forward’ project.

The event will take place in Quinn’s Corner, County Tyrone on Saturday 26th March from 12pm – 4pm.

The first part of the event is titled ‘Looking Back - The 1981 Hunger Strike’ led by Brendan ‘Bik’ McFarlane who was OC of the IRA prisoners in Long Kesh during the Hunger Strike, and Jackie McMullan who endured 48 days on the 1981 Hunger Strike.

In the concluding session, people will look at the legacy of the Hunger Strike with the theme of ‘Moving Forward – 30 Years On, A Risen People’ in a discussion led by Kathryn Reilly, who was one of the youngest candidates in the recent election in the 26 counties and recently elected TD for Meath West, Peadar Toibín.

Lunch will be provided between both talks.

Speaking ahead of the event Éirí na Gréine Project manager Barry McNally said:

“The People’s Forum will aim to build understanding and provide an insight into the 1981 Hunger Strike from key people who were involved in this pivotal moment in recent Irish history. It will also explore the significant impact and legacy of the Hunger Strike, and how it has helped shape the society we live in today, and the type of Ireland we aspire to in the future. This event is open to everyone, and will provide interest to many different people including former political prisoners, students studying this as part of their curriculum, to people who have an interest in Irish History, and those who lived through and took part in solidarity events in 1981.”

Young Republican delegation attend Corsica event

A delegation of Ógra Shinn Féin activists attended the 7th Scontri internaziunali in Corsica last week. The week long event comprised of discussions on

the role of music and liberation struggles and tourism, as well as cultural events and tours. Ógra Shinn Féin has a record of participating in this annual event organised by the youth movement Ghjuventú Indipendentista. This year, ÓSF was represented by activists Dáithí Byrne and Gemma Richmond. The event was held in Université de Corse Pascal Paoli in the town of Corte.

Scontri Internaziunali is attended every year by young representatives from all over the world, including Catalonia, Euskal Herria, Kanaky (South Pacific), Ireland and Sardinia. This year, SEGI from the Basque country had no representatives present due to increasing repression inflicted by the Spanish state. Nationalist sentiment in Corsica is high and great emphasis is placed on the native language and culture which was discussed throughout the week. In 2003, a referendum was held to decide on acquiring more autonomy from France and greater recognition for the language. The result was close, with the decision being 54,990 voting in favour compared to 57,180 votes against.

Ógra Shinn Féin International Officer Dáithí Byrne said;

"As with the previous events in Corsica, we were more than happy to attend this one in the University in Corte. The relationship between Corsican nationalists and Irish republicans is a strong and historical one. This year, we discussed tourism among other things and our delegation learned from others and vice versa with significant contributions were made by our delegation regarding the successful Irish tourism industry. These international events are hugely beneficial to the participants and make for important exchange of ideas and support. We believe that these events help solidify the links between movements across the world who strive for freedom and empowerment of the people. Corsica is a small country with a very rich culture. Over the week of discussion, native music groups such as Diana di l'Alba and L'Arcusgi demonstrated Paghjella - the singing tradition exclusive to Corsica and safeguarded by UNESCO. Overall, the week was a success and delegates and visitors were pleased to see an Irish republican delegation in Corsica. We express sincere gratitude and appreciation to our Comrades there who invited us. We will continue to build links with the Corsican youth movement and express solidarity with their cause."

UCC Commemoration - 21 March 7pm

The Annual Republican Commemoration in UCC is taking place Monday the 21st of March.
It begins at 7pm in front of the Student Centre, and the main Speaker is newly elected Cork North Central TD, Jonathan O'Brien. The macCurtain/MacSwiney RFB will be in attendance.

This years commemoration is of particular note, due to the historic breakthrough in electing 2 Cork TDs in the most recent general election, but also as it is the 90th anniversary of the Dripsey Ambush, which is where a number of those buried were captured and subsequently executed.

Ógra Shinn Féin An Lorgain react to Vance comments

ÓSF An Lorgain have denounced the comments made by the Upper Bann TUV assembly candidate David Vance regarding the raid by the Israeli military on an aid flotilla trying to bring aid to Gaza in May of 2010. Mr Vance, in a post on twitter (http://twitter.com/DVATW/status/15281404852), commented that he hoped Israel would ‘deal with’ the Irish boat the MV Rachel Corrie with ‘no messing about this time’.

He also claimed the boat was ‘full of Hamas enablers’.

Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Lee Casey stated;
‘The comments made by David Vance and other local Israeli apologists cannot hide the fact that the Israeli Military boarded a ship, in international waters, carrying humanitarian aid and killed nine voluntary aid workers. These comments are made all the more offensive when you consider the objective of the aid flotilla; to deliver basic aid supplies to the people of Gaza who are being kept in deliberate abject poverty and are routinely oppressed by the state of Israel. Would Mr Vance advocate military intervention for aid flotillas bringing aid to the people of Haiti or Darfur?’

He continued;
‘Mr Vance is also inaccurate in claiming that the boat was ‘full of Hamas enablers’ as it included on board a Nobel Peace Prize winner and a former Assistant Secretary General of the UN’
‘Mr Vance should re-think his inaccurate and offensive views but then again this is to be expected from a member of a party which revels in and celebrates military oppression, be it at the hands of the British or Israeli forces.’

Danny Morrison to launch Hunger Strike commemorative Exhibition in Omagh

The former Assembly member for Mid Ulster and current secretary of the Bobby Sands Trust, Danny Morrison, will officially launch the National Hunger Strike exhibition in the Strule Arts Centre on Monday evening at 8pm.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Mr Morrison said "The Hunger Strikes of 1980 and 1981 were defining moments in recent Irish history. As one of the negotiators at that time, I was on friendly terms with most of the men on the strike.

"As such, I find it even difficult now to talk about those 10 men and their families and what they came through. Although 30 years on, it still seems like yesterday, it's still powerful, and in terms of Republicanism, it is up there along with 1916 for its effects and inspiration.

Mr Morrison continued,

"I was absolutely delighted to receive the invite to speak at the launch of the exhibition and facilitate a discussion on the hunger strike.

"The exhibition consists of interpretative panels and personal artefacts which tells the story of the prison struggle. It is very personal and moving, and I encourage everyone, especially the younger generation to come along and learn about this period of our history.

Mr Morrison concluded,

"I have a long association with this part of Tyrone having represented the area as an Assembly member from 1982 until 1986. During this time, I made many good friends in the county and am looking forward to renewing old acquaintances.

The exhibition will be open to the public from the launch on Monday until Friday 18th March, between 10am and 8pm, except for St Patricks Day, when it closes at 5pm. The launch and exhibition has been organised by Republican ex-Prisoners support group, Éirí Na Gréine, as part of their 'Looking Back To Move Forward' project.

For those who want to go further and access live or recorded broadcasts of plenary sittings, committee meetings, press conference and other events, here are a few tips.

A European Parliament multimedia online library allows you to be up to date with the current EU debates and give you a greater insight into what happens in Brussels and Strasbourg. You can either watch a session live or go to video on demand to get a recorded broadcast.
